Renovation of lobby and hallways for student lofts in downtown Ann Arbor, MI. This eight story brick building shares its ground level with a popular sports bar and restaurant and sees its share of lively night life. Taking student culture into account, Synecdoche designed a simple yet effective ceiling piece. Durable wall paneling with industrial-grade carpeting is offset by a delicate canopy of lofted lines. Made of white 3/16" steel rods suspended just out of reach in a dark gray alcove. Panels of pre-tensioned steel rods twist and overlap, changing shape as one walks through the long lobby, as directional lighting casts patterned shadows throughout. Oversized graphic numbers across from the elevator landing, clearly mark the floor level. Each level has a different line from Robert Frost's poem Nothing Gold Can Stay at the end of each hallway, adding a colorful touch that thematically connects the different levels together.
