Built to replace the aged Old Mill Elementary School, this new 800-student school has been organized around the district's ambitious goals for collaborative learning in student groups of varying size. Using lessons learned in 2019's Marnel C Moorman School, Studio Kremer worked with the district and the Old Mill staff to continue to explore ways to develop flexible / adaptable learning spaces to serve a project-based learning curriculum.

The two-level design takes advantage of a sloping site to minimize footprint and mass, tucking into the hill and opening up on the lower side to landscaped outdoor learning spaces. Separation of traffic (cars, buses, pedestrians) was a critical consideration in the site planning, with special attention given to pick-up and drop-off stacking. 

The centerpiece of the school is a double-height Commons, designed as a hub of life for the school. The cafeteria, media center, gym, art classroom all feed off of this central space. Activity and presentation spaces are worked directly into the public space, making the learning visible and energizing the whole school environment. 

The media center and a STEAM classroom sit adjacent to the entry lobby, signalling the kind of activity visitors will see throughout the school. 

Classrooms flank large collaborative spaces and open up to these spaces with overhead doors. Classrooms also can be opened up to each other, so that a full classroom wing can be thought of as a single, flowing space for learning - an arrangement which makes shared resources available to multiple classes. A variety of smaller break-out, resource, and intervention/pull-out spaces are provided, along with teacher planning spaces. 

Durable and energy efficient materials and systems have been incorporated throughout, including brick and metal exterior cladding, a standing seam metal roof, thermally resistant insulated concrete forms (ICF), and energy efficient windows.
