Hogsett Primary School

Danville Independent Schools reconfigured their early childhood education, requiring a re-thinking of their facilities. Instead of two similar P-5 elementary schools, they shifted to a model in which one school is 2nd Grade through 5th Grade and the other serves Preschool through 1st Grade.

The existing facility intended for use by the younger students was not well-regarded in Danville and needed to be transformed. Through three small additions and comprehensive re-development of the site, the renovation re-introduced this re-invented school to the community. While traditional classrooms remain, new break-out and flex-use spaces were added, serving different kinds of activities than can be accommodated in the normal model.

Among the features of the school are a new natural playground at the front – a signal that this is a different kind of place than before. Traditional playgrounds for preschool and K-1 were provided behind the school, as well as a series of protected small group spaces for outdoor classroom and activity use.
