Henry County Public Library

Henry County Public Library engaged Studio Kremer in 2016 to help them program and prepare studies for a new library to replace their existing facility. In addition to normal library activities, they had increased the amount of in-library programming and events and wanted to accommodate these large group activities.

The solution was to provide a large meeting room and to have its rear wall be retractable, allowing larger groups to expand into the main library area. Stacks were made mobile to accommodate this overflow of the large room.

Children's programming was also an important component of HCPL's service, so a large area was set aside, slightly removed from the main reading room areas, so that children could have stacks, reading, and activity spaces.

The stakeholder group expressed interest in the design recalling agricultural buildings seen around the county but, more importantly, they wanted the interior to feature the open wood structure and large volume often found in these structures. The main reading room, therefore, features open wood trusses with mechanical and electrical elements concealed or carefully integrated.
