2018 AIA Kentucky Citation for Community Impact

Eminence Independent Schools is a small district in a small town accomplishing extraordinary things. Even before their recognition as one of the Kentucky Department of Education’s "Districts of Innovation", the high school was sending all of their students via a wi-fi enabled bus to a local university for classes carrying college credits. Middle and elementary school students were developing websites, QR codes, and doing 3d prints of models they’d developed.

The district wanted a facility that matched up with their technology-driven curriculum and they challenged Studio Kremer Architects to work with them to invent one. The result is the EdHub, a large assembly space surrounded by interconnecting classrooms and group study spaces – defined as their “library” only in that it will still accommodate the district’s RFID-tagged print media in stacks lining the perimeter of the building.

Otherwise, the EdHub is about integration of digital media with projects that grow out of questions posed, applications developed, and projects presented by students to their peers.

Not incidentally, the EdHub also accommodates the new entrance and the administrative areas, becoming the school’s new identity to the community and its primary social interaction space.
