Located at the intersection of E 149th Street, 3rd Avenue, Willis, and Melrose in the South Bronx, the active commercial intersection known as “the Hub” also provides access to 3 subway and 4 bus routes. The project grew out of a community development corporation, SoBro, partnering with the Department of Design and Construction to create an open active plaza that could provide community and green space while still serving its crucial role as an urban transit and commercial Hub.The design consists of a black granite linear element which serves to contain space while remaining porous. The granite supports planting, custom heat-modified wood benches and an infinity edge water feature, which doubles as a performance stage in the winter months when it will be turned off. Concrete pavers provide a pixelated transition from the dark grey of the sidewalk to a lighter concrete which contrasts with the black granite.
