A study examining the potential of road side restrooms to provide a true refreshing respite for travelers, this design responded to a competition brief to replace a rest stop in the Central Valley region of California along Route 99. The emphasis on rest and refreshment is manifest in modular individual private toilet stalls designed to maximize passive cooling and exhaust, connected by a public covered walkway. It is designed to minimize maintenance with solar power, rainwater reclamation and an on-site "living machine" water treatment facility. The landscape design also highlights local natural features such as vernal pools of wildflowers and grasses.
