The William P. Wilder ‘40 Arena & Sports Complex

B+H Architects [2006]

This $16.5 million hockey arena and sports complex was completed in 2009 on Upper Canada College’s historic campus. It replaced the Patrick Johnson Arena, whose demolition began in August 2007. The facility houses one NHL-sized and one Olympic-sized rink. This facility provides the College with double the ice surfaces, as well as football, rugby, soccer and hockey locker rooms, an alumni lounge, increased spectator viewing and a spacious lobby, among many other needed amenities. The facility is the first “green” arena complex at a Canadian independent school, with significant environmentally sensitive and cost-effective heating and cooling infrastructures. I worked on initial site assessments, historic context analysis, sustainable strategies, and schematic design.
