[Technische Universiteit Delft 2008]
I was one of 20 students selected from around the world to participate in a Docomomo (International committee for the documentation and conservation of buildings, sites and neighbourhoods of the modern movement) charrette for the City of Rotterdam to devise a plan to preserve and revitalize an important, historic district in their downtown. This area is composed almost entirely of Modernist buildings constructed just after WWII when Rotterdam was nearly leveled. One of the more famous singular buildings is a department store by Marcel Breuer (lower left). We proposed a mix of restoration, adaptive use, and infill to help breathe new life and appreciation into this unique neighborhood.
