A Pristine Environment of Secluded Luxury
OBMI created the architectural vision for the Scrub Island Resort, Spa and Marina, which became the Caribbean’s first resort to join the exclusive Marriott Autograph Collection of boutique hotels selected for their uniqueness. It is also the first luxury, private-island resort development to be built in the British Virgin Islands in more than 15 years.
The name “Scrub Island” may sound rough around the edges, but this exclusive private island resort, spa and marina in the British Virgin Islands is as posh as they come. Prior to development, Scrub Island was untouched terrain, allowing OBMI the unique opportunity to work with a blank slate. This placed immense responsibility on OBMI to create a master plan that delivered an exotic island paradise, while upholding a high level of respect for the Virgin Island’s context, culture and climate.
The first phase of development is centered around a Marina Village and Welcome Center. Serving as the heart and soul of the development, Scrub Island’s Marina Village boasts a 60-slip marina, over 5,000 square feet of retail and commercial space, multiple multi-level lagoon-style pools, and 67 Marina Village hotel rooms and suites. The resort is also comprised of 11 two-bedroom Ocean Villas, each with private pool, keyed as additional hotel inventory. Through this approach, OBMI created a sustainable architectural design for Scrub Island Resort that left large areas of the island untouched from development.
For the second phase of the project, OBMI designed the real estate expansion of Scrub Island with luxury residences in three styles. The various luxury residences are stepped around the hillside of the island, each integrated into the terrain and positioned to offer total privacy yet spectacular island views of the Caribbean. The architecture and design of the villas complements the resort by speaking to a British Colonial-style with distinct touches of Caribbean in a village-inspired setting.
