We are looking at the work of very good if far from famous architects doing remarkable work right here at home—not starchitects toiling away on the other side of the planet, cooking up schemes that may well never get built. [...] It was not that long ago that Mr. Kimmelman was writing a column called "Abroad," dealing with artistic matters in Europe. Now, here he is, plying local waters, reminding the world [New York[ is still the place to be and build. — New York Observer

"The Way We Live Now" is an appropriate phrase.
I would be much more excited about Kimmelman's approach if it didn't immediately follow Ouroussoff. The switch from pro-starchitect to anti-starchitect bugs me. It reminds me other incriminating reversals by the news media. Who remembers Tucker Carlson's short lived PBS program or Bill Kristol's NY Times column? These happened in the swinging Bush years when PBS and the NY Times needed to prove they were not liberal. In what direction will the winds blow tomorrow? Maybe Kimmelman will be the last NY Times architecture critic.
i really like the approach he's taken so far, i think the starchitect stuff can and should be discussed also so readers of the Times are aware of what's happening globally, but it's nice to have one writing about architecture issues like affordable housing and smaller scale civic buildings that New Yorkers come across daily but maybe haven't thought that much about.
