Following our previous look at an opening for an Assistant Professor of Architectural Design, Structures, and Mass Timber at the University of Oregon, we are using this week’s edition of our Job Highlights series to explore an open role on Archinect Jobs for a Capital Projects Manager at the DC Public Library.
The role, based in DC with remote opportunities available, calls for an individual to “shepherd the delivery of the assigned new construction and renovation projects” across the library’s extensive portfolio. Among the requirements for the role is a minimum five years of experience in the AEC industry, and a track record of successfully managing concurrent new construction and complex renovation projects.
The open role at the DC Public Library offers us the opportunity to take a closer look at the architecture and infrastructure behind an important literary institution in Washington DC. At present, the DC Public Library operates 26 locations across the city, having been originally created by an act of Congress in 1896.
The open position will be based primarily at the MLK Jr. Memorial Library, which Archinect has covered extensively in recent years. Originally designed by Mies van der Rohe and completed in 1972, the library underwent a three-year transformation by Mecanoo and OTJ Architects before reopening in October 2020. The building was Mies van der Rohe's only library design and his final act as an architect.
The DC Public Library’s portfolio also includes the Northeast Neighbourhood Library, which first opened in 1932 and is the fourth-oldest DC Public Library still in operation. In 2010, BELL Architects completed an exterior renovation of the Georgian Revival building along with a 2013 LEED Gold addition and renovation of the interior.
Elsewhere, 2012 saw the delivery of the DC Public Library West End Branch. Designed by CORE architecture + design and TEN Arquitetos, the scheme prioritizes an airy, bright modern interior with soaring angled columns, along with vivid colorful accents to define the spatial journey. The LEED Gold building also features a dedicated pavilion in the children’s area accentuated by cooler blue, green, and magenta color tones.
CORE architecture + design was also hired to renovate, redesign, and restore the DC Public Library’s historic ‘Carnegie’ Mt Pleasant Branch. In addition to preserving the historic elements of the existing building, a glass connector was created between the historic structure and a new addition. The new wing houses conference and gathering spaces, staff offices, and mechanical spaces, freeing the historic structure for reading areas.
