Following our previous look at an opening for a Design and Construction Manager at the Eames Institute, we are using this week’s edition of our Job Highlights series to explore an open role on Archinect Jobs for an Assistant Professor of Architectural Design, Structures, and Mass Timber at the University of Oregon.
The role, based in Eugene, Oregon, requires an individual who will “have experience or show evidence of capacity to effectively teach structures for architecture students and lead research in mass timber structures.” The position will also involve research into new advances in sustainable materials, construction, and technology to produce eco-friendly, net zero, and low-impact buildings.
The open role at the University of Oregon offers us the opportunity to look back on some of the significant research advances and commercial applications of mass timber recently featured in our editorial. Last month, for example, RIOS completed a new mass timber mixed-use project in Los Angeles on a former industrial site while BIG provided an update on work at one of the largest mass timber projects in the European Union.
In August, meanwhile, ZGF completed a mass timber airport terminal in Portland, Oregon after a five-year renovation while Herzog & de Meuron’s mass timber HORTUS project advanced in Switzerland. Our editorial has also recently highlighted some of the challenges still facing the adoption of mass timber in the United States including a lack of product standardization.
The University of Oregon itself has previously made news for its work in mass timber. Back in 2022, the university’s College of Design was awarded more than $16 million in federal funds to bolster timber application in construction. Among the research themes explored with the funds were affordable housing with mass timber, sound-dampening products, and timber construction methods.
