Washington, DC
The library, which first opened in 1932, is the fourth-oldest D.C. Public Library (DCPL) building still in operation. The renovated building now features state-of-the-art technology and highlights the architectural elements of the Georgian Revival building.
BELL Architects completed the exterior renovation in 2010 and in December of 2013 finished the LEED Gold interior renovations and addition. Improvements made in the $10 million renovation include: restored original wood furnishings; new plumbing, electrical and HVAC systems; improved lighting; increased space for library programs; dedicated space for teens; new quiet study rooms; and new restrooms.
This project successfully displays the balance between incorporating modern systems and preserving historic spaces.
