Following our previous look at an opening for a Robotics/Prototype Specialist at the University of Redlands School of Architecture, we are using the latest edition of our Job Highlights series to explore an opening on Archinect Jobs for a Visualization Designer at Payette.
The role, based in Boston, calls for an individual who will be responsible for 3D modeling and grasshopper creation within the firm’s Design Visualizations Group, which “works closely with architecture teams to study, develop, and present complex design solutions.” Among the requirements for the role are a Bachelor’s degree in architecture, excellent 3D modeling skills with Rhino, and preferably experience in Revit, Sketchup, and Grasshopper.
Why the role interests us
The open role for a visualization designer at Payette offers us the opportunity to review recent innovations and trends within the architectural visualization space. In July, for example, our editorial reported on Istanbul-based architectural designer Fatih Ekşi, who has amassed over a million followers across Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube for his food-inspired architectural visuals. Ekşi’s visuals combine software with the principles of biomimetic architecture to produce designs whose form, structure, and building program utilize the natural geometries found in fruits, vegetables, and meat.
Also in July, we reported on the development of Gendo, a new AI visualization platform created by London-based architectural designer George Proud with the help of his colleague and software engineer Will Jones. Launched following a $1.1 million investment, the platform claims to convert 2D drawings, sketches, or text-based inputs into life-like visualizations, with Zaha Hadid Architects, David Chipperfield Architects, and Benoy among the beta testers.
Given the recent popularization of AI-powered image creation tools such as Midjourney and Dall-E, visualization was a significant topic of conversation during our Archinect In-Depth: Artificial Intelligence series, which ran throughout 2023. As part of the series, we spoke with popular visualizer Alexis Christodoulou, who told us: “In the right hands, AI is a great tool for extending our research capabilities.”
Meanwhile, UCLA AUD Entertainment Studio lead Natasha Sandmeier offered us an insight into how architectural educators could approach the integration of AI-powered visualization in architecture school studios. “I would warn that the ease of creating infinite images using generative AI tools enters an awkward space when it comes up against the idea of style,” Sandmeier told us. “Students can become too enamored with the detail and precision through which Midjourney can create imagery, which leads me to ask them: "Is this your style? Is this in your hand?”
