Following our previous look at an opening for an Exhibition Design Internship at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, we are using the latest edition of our Job Highlights series to explore an opening on Archinect Jobs for a Robotics/Prototype Specialist at the University of Redlands School of Architecture.
The role, based on-campus in Redlands, California, calls for an individual who will “support the application of computer science/information technology including robotics and prototyping to architecture and design,” as well as deliver orientations and demonstrations to students, staff, and faculty for the university’s robotics lab. Among the prerequisites for the role are a bachelor’s degree in architecture, information technology, or a related field, alongside experience in computational design.
Why the role interests us
Redlands’ search for a robotics specialist offers us the opportunity to explore some of the recent applications of robotics by architecture and design schools both within the United States and abroad. In February, for example, our editorial reported on a new safety inspection method developed by researchers at Drexel University, which uses autonomous robots aided by machine learning technology. Elsewhere, the University of Illinois announced in 2023 that it would launch a dedicated center for autonomous construction research.
Further afield, the University of British Columbia recently announced the development of “smart construction robots,” which are designed to perform basic tasks on construction sites, including lifting and moving objects. In Europe, meanwhile, ETH Zurich recently unveiled a 3D printed sculpture that seeks to showcase “an innovative robotic additive manufacturing method that enables the printing of doubly curved thin shells more efficiently.”
The growing interest in robotics exhibited by design schools in the U.S. and abroad comes at a time when such technology is already being adapted commercially. In 2023, we reported on a new domed timber pavilion in Germany assembled by robots, while in Texas, 3D printing company ICON recently unveiled a suite of new technologies, including a robotic system capable of printing buildings of multiple stories.
Earlier this year, Archinect spoke with ICON’s Melodie Yashar about the future of robotics in architecture in a conversation that spanned applications on Earth and Mars. The topic of 3D printing in architecture was also central to our recent interview with Bjarke Ingels, while our Archinect In-Depth: Artificial Intelligence series included a feature article dedicated to the topic of robotics in construction. For the latter piece, our reporting featured interviews with Boston Dynamics and Foster + Partners.
