Following last week’s look at an opening for a Project Manager at Food Architects DPC, we are using this week’s edition of our Job Highlights series to explore an open role on Archinect Jobs for a Studio Director at Doug Aitken Workshop.
The role, based in Venice, CA, calls for an individual to “take on the day-to-day running” of Aitken’s dynamic and tight-knit studio. The ideal candidate will have experience in the art world and knowledge of contemporary art, as well as being a “responsible, intelligent, creative problem solver who is excited to grow with the studio.”
Why the role interests us
The open role at Doug Aitken Workshop allows us to profile the work of one of the most prominent multidisciplinary artists in the United States. Born in California in 1968, Aitken has established a reputation for immersive, experiential works of art that explore themes of modern existence, technology, and the natural world.
Aitken's exploration of space and environment is most evident in his site-specific installations. His Mirage series, which began with a mirror-clad house in the California desert in 2017, reflects and distorts the surrounding landscape, creating a thought-provoking interplay between the natural and the artificial. The project would ultimately extend beyond California to feature in an art installation Mirage Detroit, as we reported in 2018.
“Mirage embodies ideas of the American West as they have been passed down from early settlers to artist pioneers,” the studio says about the work. “The exterior will seemingly disappear, while the interior will draw the viewer into a never-ending kaleidoscope of light and reflection.”
More recently, the home served as a heavy inspiration for the new dark comedy The Curse, in which Emma Stone’s character Whitney Siegel received online criticism for seemingly copying Mirage when creating her own reflective home. “I’m all for it,” Aitken said in reaction to the home’s cameo in the show. “I think it’s great that they’re making this fever dream narrative of the modern condition.”
