The UK-based salary transparency advocates The Pay 100 have released their latest set of survey data on average salaries across UK firms. Expanding upon last year’s inaugural snapshot of results, the 2023 addition also includes data on unpaid overtime.
As reported by the Architect’s Journal, almost 1000 submissions have been made to the database. Like the 2022 edition, the latest tables are organized into three common job titles in the UK industry: Part I Architectural Assistant (less than three years in the role), Part II Architectural Assistant (less than three years in the role), and Architect / Architectural Designer (less than five years in the role).
For Part I Assistants, the highest average annual surveys were to be found at Foster + Partners (£31,000), Allford Hall Monaghan Morris (£30,000), Burwell Architects (£30,000), and Zaha Hadid Architects (£29,000). For Part II Assistants, the highest-ranking firms were Adamson Associates (£43,000), Studio Egret West (£40,000), Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios (£37,700), and Foster + Partners (£37,000). Finally, for Architects / Architectural Designers, the highest-ranking firms were BSBG (£56,000), Mace (£49,000), Ström Architects (£48,500), and Benoy (£48,000).
An added feature in the 2023 edition is The Pay 100's disclosure of unpaid overtime hours per week for each firm on their ranking. For Architects and Architectural Designers, notable listings include BDP Pattern at 15 hours of unpaid overtime per week, Heatherwick Studio at 13 hours, HKR Architects at 20 hours, and Zaha Hadid Architects at 20 hours.
“This year we introduced ourselves to the 350 practices submitted into our 2022 survey,” the organizers say. “We provided an update on opportunities for them to become involved with the Pay 100, such as accreditation, or advertising employee benefits alongside their 2023 survey listing. Our aspiration going forward is heightened engagement with practices, to build on what we have begun as an industry striving for improved financial conditions amongst an ever-challenging economy.”

20 hours per week! terrible.
The highest-paying UK firms have salary scales about 2/3 of US major metro areas? Interesting.
Yes. Its a huge difference.
Wow US architect salaries are much higher in comparison
I think a lot of folks underestimate how much higher American salaries are compared to Europe ... and even Canada. Higher COL too of course, but its not like London is that much cheaper than NYC.
Regarding COL, I wonder how much the discrepancy holds true if you consider "total compensation"? Does UK have longer/more European (I don't think so?) tradition of vacation/time-off? How does cost of insurance (despite NHS shortcomings) weigh?
