Yahoo! Finance has compiled a list of the highest-paying countries for architects. Using data acquired from the Economic Research Institute (ERI), the outlet “identified the countries with the highest demand for architects and then made a list for 27 countries with the average salaries for architects.”
“Of those 27, the 15 with the highest average salaries were selected and have been ranked,” Yahoo data journalist Afifa Mushtaque added.
Yahoo!’s resulting list of countries, and the average salary for architects, is as follows (salaries in USD):
Yahoo!’s analysis derives from data collected by the ERI, a compensation analytics company based in Irvine, California. According to the company, their salary survey data is collected “from internal surveys, third-party salary surveys, and public sources,” all of which are used to “calculate geographic salary differentials and assist with compensation planning.”
“Each year, we open a participation window from October to April,” the company adds. ”During that time, we reach out to companies and give them the opportunity to participate and contribute their salary survey data and benefits information.”
While offering an insightful window into the architectural salaries landscape of the various countries, it should be noted that the report does not specify whether ‘architect’ is limited to a licensed practitioner on the registry of their respective country (such as an NCARB roster in the United States or the UK’s ARB register), or includes other roles such as pre-licensure graduates or architectural technicians.
A deeper analysis of the figures would also be required to understand how each salary level compares with the cost of living in their respective country.

In Ireland the starting salary for registered architects is approximately €40000. The median salary in Ireland for registered architects with 7- 10 years experience is in the region of €70000 - €75000. A director can expect a salary in the region of €90000.- €120000
I'm an architect in Ireland myself....your 40,000 EUR for architects who've just joined the register sounds right, though in a large firm in Dublin you should expect at least 5,000 EUR more. Director levels also sound right to me. But I would have thought your 7-10 figure should be lower...would the salary of a new RIAI registered grad really jump 30k in 7-10 years?
Will happily forgo $3K to practice in Denmark
Some adjustment for the costs of living among the various nations would be helpful. I suspect US salaries would not be so high after subtracting the employees' salary deductions for health insurance, retirement plan contributions, etc. These things are either free or much lower priced in the rest of the world.
Also adjusted by region. In NYC they're making six figures pretty early in their careers; in a medium-sized city in the Midwest I just cracked six figures for the first time in my life after over 25 years of practice (and sadly I had to leave the architecture field to do it). Starting salary in my area is between $60k and $72K, I think.
