Following last week’s look at an opening for a Program Production Fellow at MoMA PS1, we are using this week’s edition of our Job Highlights series to explore an opportunity on Archinect Jobs for a Facilities Accessibility Planner at Yale University.
The role, based in New Haven, CT, calls for an individual who will “develop and manage reporting on accessibility projects and identify future projects for campus-wide accessibility improvements.” Among the required education and experience for the role are a Bachelor’s degree in architecture or planning and a “proven ability to develop planning solutions and participate in the resolution of planning and technical issues.”
Why the role interests us
The emphasis on accessibility in the latest Yale role offers us the opportunity to examine other steps recently taken across the United States to improve accessibility within the built environment. In 2023, our editorial has seen several updates regarding a lawsuit taking place over accessibility issues at the Steven Holl-designed Hunters Point Library in New York City, including our July coverage that tied the case to wider ADA failures. In May, meanwhile, we covered architect Silvia Prandelli’s analysis of accessibility and inclusivity features in stadiums designed by Prandelli’s firm Populous.
In April, we covered a report from Fast Company that detailed the success of accessibility measures being taken in playgrounds across the United States, while also drawing international inspiration from a colorful, multifunctional public park in Poland designed by SLAS architekci. In April, meanwhile, we covered the news that New York’s MTA will officially make 95% of subway stations ADA-compliant by 2055, building on last year’s news that Chicago will receive $185 million for long-awaited CTA station accessibility upgrades.
Elsewhere at Yale, meanwhile, the university recently featured as part of our Get Lectured series which profiles various events and lectures happening at architecture schools across the United States. Earlier this year, we covered the news that the Yale School of Architecture was to name a new scholarship in honor of 2022 Pritzker Prize winner Francis Kéré, while in February, we took a look inside the university’s new Center for Architecture and Ecosystems.
In May, the Yale School of Architecture’s Associate Dean Phil Bernstein authored a feature article for Archinect as part of the Archinect In-Depth: Artificial Intelligence series, while the school’s visiting critic Christopher Hawthorne received a 2023 BEVY Leadership Award for Media Excellence.
