Summer is winding down, and that means it's time again for our Get Lectured series, which continues today with a look at the events taking place at the University at Buffalo School of Architecture and Planning this fall.
This academic year’s programming at UB is centered around the theme For/From: Considering Origins and explores the topic’s significance within an architecture and planning context, culminating in a body of thought that touches on areas such as placemaking, memory, and the importance of cultural exchange which are all vital components of understanding and success in both disciplines.
"As a globalized society, our identities and origins are often complicated and dynamic," the school explains. "The ideas of ‘from’ and ‘for’ directly probe this complexity. One may be removed or distanced from where one originated, one may return after years of being away, or one may have never left in the first place. [...] Whether these relationships are natural, adopted, forced, planned, or unexpected, the standpoints will afford a critical reflection on what it is to think, teach, and practice design for the place, culture, people, and/or species from which the designer originates."
Events start with Buffalo-based Ants of the Prairie co-founder Joyce Hwang on September 6, followed by Sekou Cooke's appearance on September 20 and Parsons School of Design Professor David Gissen on September 27. The following month kicks off with Aziza Chaouni's visit on October 4 and continues with successive lectures from University of Washington professor Jeffrey Hou on October 11, BDP Impact Real Estate expert Dale White on October 18, and Barclay & Crousse co-founders Sandra Barclay and Jean Pierre Crousse on October 25.
Sarah Herda of The Graham Foundation comes to campus on November 2 together with Maurice Cox of the Chicago Department of Planning and Development. University of Copenhagen professors Svava Riesto and Henriette Steiner will visit on November 8 to culminate the lectures series. The semester's end also includes the Symposium on Gender Diversity and Space on November 15, featuring Ivan Coyote, Susan Stryker, Joel Sanders, and Seb Choe.

Wonder what this means for the Nov 2nd chat? Perhaps more of a introspective, "lessons learned"...
