Nicholas Korody talked with Denise Scott Brown about Learning from Las Vegas. To be published as three edited parts, the first details her early biography and architectural influences. In part 2 she explains the unique pedagogical methods she pioneered, alongside Robert Venturi.
"I was applying urban planning pedagogy to architecture; teaching students to oscillate from analysis to synthesis in the design process, and to see their creativity as lying in both."
Part 3, TBD...

Architect Peter Zellner of ZELLNERandCompany announced the 2017 launch of a new, tuition-free post-graduate school of architecture dubbed, appropriately, the Free School of Architecture (FSA). Olaf_ and wadeandrewdrake both felt Marc Miller’s take was "Brutal, but you're probably not wrong. Though, in many ways architectural education resembles The Salon, visionary/paper architecture has a long tradition. Dialogues between architects and their clients are becoming increasingly necessary if the potential economic and cinematic influence of architecture is going to continue to grow."
The Archinect Architecture Salary Poll data was broken down further by size of firms. In case you forgot "the Architecture Salary Poll isn’t scientific, as the data comes from a self-selecting demographic of architects who choose to self-report their salary info." Nonetheless bowling_ball found the data "very, very depressing...I had a rough day at work but after seeing this, i think I'll try to complain a little less."

Reacting to the news that a house built by University of Oregon students has been honored with the 2016 Golden Key Award (for Most Innovative Homeownership project in the state), makingspace griped "it's amazing how a ranch house with a sloped roof is awarded as being ‘innovative.’ it's essentially a highly insulated house that incorporates a few passive technologies. while it is better than a typical tract house, there's nothing really remarkable about it. in terms of affordability it's also a loser"
Discussions/Threads
1992bruin questioned whether Designing through section was still hip and/or why not? archiwutm8 perhaps struck a bit too close to home "IRL no one cares unless its a CD section..." thisisnotmyname opined "the dull sections being made in schools today come from a preoccupation with facade cladding skins and computer generated patterns." Later chigurh offered up an apocryphal of sorts -
"It was conscious decision for academia to discard the section as a drawing/view in which to design or consider building space. Eisenmen did a lecture at the GSD titled: ‘sections - what are they good for’...Soon after, students quit drawing sections and the profession quickly followed."
archietechie pointed out the latest Patrik vs Mark foster gage kerfuffle. Josh Mings criticized "Patrik's line of thinking actually isn't visionary at all. In fact, it is self-serving and ignorant of the world we live in." Dangermouse added "Rem is bullish on Europe and leveraging state infrastructures to create novel architectural projects, and I'll take his opining over Patrik every time." archietechie is ultimately just glad "Tom and MFG put him in his place"
