The Mexico-city based firm Escobedo Solíz Studio, founded in 2011 by Lazbent Pavel Escobedo and Andres Solíz, has been announced as the winner of MoMA and MoMA PS1’s Young Architects Program (YAP).
The annual competition (now in its 17th year) is aimed at emerging architectural talent, giving young designers the chance to exhibit in an interactive, urban setting during the PS1’s summer programming. As stipulated within the competition, the winner's design must provide shade, seating and water, and “address environmental issues, including sustainability and recycling.” Prior winners have included Andrés Jaque (2015), The Living (2014), CODA (2013), MOS (2009), and WORKac (2008), among others.
Escobedo Solíz Studio’s winning proposal, “Weaving the Courtyard,” will install “platforms of soil and water” and “a reflective wading pool” in PS1’s courtyard, all underneath a colorful woven canopy. The installation will debut as the setting for Warm Up, PS1's summer music series, beginning in early June. The materials are slated for re-use once YAP concludes for the summer. Sean Anderson, Associate Curator in MoMA’s Architecture and Design department, describes “Weaving the Courtyard” in a press release issued by MoMA PS1 earlier today: “Escobedo Solíz’s ingenious proposal speaks to both the ephemerality of architectural imagery today but also to the nature of spatial transactions more broadly.”
Other works by Escobedo Solíz Studio in Mexico include a chapel/community center in Campeche, made of recycled timber, Duplex Housing in Mexico City, and a Research Center in Meztitlan.
Other finalists for this year’s YAP included: First Office (Andrew Atwood and Anna Neimark), Ultramoderne (Yasmin Vorbis and Aaron Forrest), COBALT OFFICE (Andrew Colopy and Robert Booth), and Frida Escobedo.

Neat idea.
Refreshingly simple like the early installations.
Every year I'm underwhelmed by the winners. The renderings are evocative, but the end result is typically a hot, empty courtyard in the middle of August. Ball Nogues, from a few years ago, was really nice. Since then, not so much. I feel like this competition might be losing it's relevance.
