Nicholas Korody penned a double review; of 'The Geological Imagination' and 'The Underdome Guide to Energy Reform'. He finds "The two books also help illuminate some of the difficulties in perceiving climate change, while offering some potentials for movement" and goes on to reference "enmeshment", systems thinking and dark ecology.
Plus, Robert Urquhart took stock of how The Bartlett and the Architectural Association are "bringing emerging technologies into the UK's architecture education".
News
Denise Scott Brown, along with her husband Robert Venturi, have won the 2016 AIA Gold Medal. Snubbed of the 1991 Pritzker Prize when Venturi was named as the only laureate, Scott Brown is the second female recipient of the Gold Medal.
In honor of the happy and historic occasion, Denise Scott Brown appeared on Archinect Sessions #45.
To DWLindeman it "is splendid good news, and a long overdue award...Robert Venturi was right to say to the AIA ‘not without Denise.’ This is also a very significant cultural event for American architecture and aesthetics...Or to put it another way: Venturi and Scott Brown have done lots of things in the third dimension."
Liam Young (of AA's Unknown Fields Division and Tomorrow's Thoughts Today) joined Paul Petrunia and Nicholas Korody in the Archinect studio for Archinect Sessions One-to-One #4.
Olaf Design Ninja_ thought it was a "good podcast". He also agrees that the professional "title needs to cover a lot more". Steven Ward had a totally different take, this was one interview he couldn’t finish. Further the conversation made him "glad to be operating in a more conventional way within the profession...if it's all research and small interventions and critiques, that seems like it only *reduces* the agency of the profession".
Blair Kamin scrutinized the recent awarding of an honor award to El Centro, a building designed by Juan Moreno, by the Chicago branch of the AIA, as an exemplary case of architectural photography in the age of photoshop. At least this time, Miles Jaffe and b3tadine[sutures] are in agreement, "the outrage is a bit odd...All photography is suspect".
Orhan Ayyüce panned the competition to design the traffic control tower at istanbul’s new airport -
"haven't seen another competition where both the client's request for inspiration and architects' response to it were so literal, mediocre and uninspired...A revealing step backward for Zaha, Fuksas, and Safdie."
Julia Ingalls reviewed the newly released 'Architectural Guide China' by Evan Chakroff, Addison Godel and Jacqueline Gargus, "a remarkable fourth dimensional tour".

For those looking for employment in academia, The University of Kentucky College of Design is looking to hire a Director of the School of Architecture. Or UIC - School of Architecture is accepting applicants for the Douglas A. Garofalo Fellowship (2016–2017 academic year).
Discussions/Threads
situationist worries about "how you assess/manage potential conflicts of interest and your own liability as a professional...Where is this line between citizen and professional?", if you sit on steering committees and boards? Larchinect has been deeply involved in the community "mostly without sitting on boards...I am becoming a believer in informal networks rather than formalized systems". Later 3tk answered "It's usually not an issue unless you start directing decisions, provide drawings, or steer work to yourself".
Miles Jaffe contrasted Nervi's church in SF to the TWA terminal. He went on to explain "Similar constructions with near opposite effects...I think the difference has to do with process. Saarinen individually designed the terminal, whereas St. Mary's was a collaborative effort among five architects." chigurh had one quibble, "your out of context photo of nervi's church in SF does not do it justice at all."
Cambino (a first time poster) was looking for assistance with Sloped Shingle Roof Expansion Joints?! Specifically, was looking to confirm the directions so far provided by structural. taz offered up a wealth of knowledge "the correct solution/product in part depends on how much movement is anticipated. In seismic country...Situra RedLine used a lot (with concrete construction...) since it's an engineered membrane that can sustain inches of movement in multiple directions". Also suggests "C/S Expansion Joint Covers" as on option, if likely overkill. 5839 added "Johns Manville has details for sloped shingle roof on their website, with the expando-flash joint."
Finally no_form wanted help identifying the zeitgeist, that’s if there is "really even" one? jla-x argues "we are in the age of rampant Corporatism." In terms of form archiwutm8 thinks it's more like "luxurious sculptures".
