• Álvaro Siza and Herzog & de Meuron win first Mies Crown Hall Americas Prize in Chicago: In its inaugural year, the Prize was established by Wiel Arets, Dean of the Illinois Institute of Technology's College of Architecture, to honor the best built work in the Americas.

• Tom Kundig loses lawsuit against his Washington valley cabin: The architect will have to remove a seasonal tourism hut erected on the ridge of the scenic Methow Valley, after residents of the valley sued based on "protective covenants for visual consideration".
• Obama's presidential library: four radical visions of the future from top architects: The Guardian asked their US Opinion bureau to solicit proposals from a few reputable U.S. architects, two years shy of the end of Obama's term.

Monday, October 20:

• Judith Edelman, Architect, 91, Is Dead; Firebrand in a Male-Dominated Field: Edelman is remembered for her efforts to create gender equity in the profession – according to a survey she cited at a 1974 national AIA convention, women accounted for only 1.2 percent of registered U.S. architects.
• End of weird architecture in China?: Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Communist Party in China, expressed his disdain for China's "weird" architecture at a literary symposium in Beijing, as it fails to be "morally inspiring art".
