Peter Jay Sharp Building (New Brooklyn Academy of Music)

The Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), which opened in 1861, is America’s oldest performing arts center. It was destroyed by fire and replaced in 1908 by the new Academy of Music, now known as the Peter Jay Sharp Building.

The façade of the Brooklyn Academy of Music underwent some restorations which includes an undulating glass canopy which complements the BAM historic building elements with contemporary building design and vision. In 2008, the new glass canopy outside its landmark Peter Jay Sharp building was completed.

As Engineer-of-Record, Radhi Majmudar of DMP  was responsible for the structural design of the undulating pin supported glass and steel canopy for the façade renovation. The 132-ft canopy is made up of 65 triangular, laminated, tempered, low-iron one-inch-thick glass supported by a pair of 12” stainless steel tubes that tie back into the newly erected columns. The triangular structure of the glass and steel canopy carries the loads with an upper tension chord and a lower compression prop.
