Bethpage Water Improvements at Plant No. 6 for VOC (volatile organic compound) removal

To protect Bethpage Water Plant 6  from the effects of pollution, new air stripper towers were installed to remove the volatile organic compounds that threatened these public supply wells.

Innovative Structural and Specialty Engineering  worked with PSI Process / Pumping Services and Monroe Environmental  to analyze the structural support system for an approximate 40 ft tall 5700 cfm / 1400 gpm air stripper tower.

This work was park of a larger initiative, a 19.5 million water treatment facility for the Bethpage Water District as high levels of contaminants continued to spread from the former Northrop Grumman Site.

New treatment plant No. 6 on Motor Lane allowed the district to treat concentrated levels of VOCs heading towards its drinking water wells and to do it more efficiently.

According to the water district, the water treatment plant will remove existing outdated infrastructure and install two new air stripping units outfitted with carbon filtration systems and a new clear well that will have up to five times the capacity of existing systems.

The site was contaminated by airplane and space exploration research, testing and manufacturing at Navy and Northrop Grumman sites beginning in the 1930s and lasting until the 1990s.

Experts say that the toxic groundwater plume is 4 miles long, nearly 2 miles wide and moving southeast about 1 ft per day, reports
