Subway Station Entrance

OBJECTIVES

  • Create New York City Transit’s flagship entrance to the 42nd Street-Times Square station. It would provide a rare street level presence for the largest and busiest station in New York’s subway system.
  • Comply with the 42nd Street Redevelopment Corporation’s requirements for animated signs and billboards, part of their effort to revitalize Times Square.

DESIGN

  • The wave-form ceiling, constructed from corrugated stainless steel panels, is the design’s central element, and reflects the lively flow of pedestrian traffic on Times Square’s sidewalks and on the subway platforms underground.
  • The undulating ceiling acts to mask the relatively low ceiling height available in the space.
  • The wave-form continues outside, becoming the canopy which supports the animated and brightly-lit subway signs.
  • The design incorporates NYC Transit standards and equipment, from token booths and turnstiles to specially-designed fluorescent light fixtures, which are integrated into the ceiling design.
  • Fragments of the station‘s original ceramic tile wall decoration are incorporated as focal points in the space.
