Private Residence
OBJECTIVES
- New construction for a couple with an extensive collection of modern and contemporary art which they wanted to feature and display in the house.
- Maximize open views to the water while keeping a low profile in the landscape and community.
DESIGN
- The aesthetic and spatial language of the house is inspired by the Clients’ love of 20th Century art. The refined, understated forms of the walls and floors, made of local limestone, and the plaster ceilings are intended to provide a muted backdrop for the art, as well as harken back to the architecture of the same time period.
- Consistent with this style, the extensive glazed walls of large fixed picture windows and sliding glass doors open out to the gorgeous landscape and the water views beyond.
- The lower floor, where guest bedrooms and support functions are located, is recessed into the gently sloping grade, helping to maintain a low building outline and minimizing the house’s visual disruption on the surrounding landscape.
