Private Residence
OBJECTIVES
- Accommodate a large number and types of spaces, including multiple bedroom suites, guest bedrooms, large dining, living and entertaining rooms all capable of hosting large events, and related support functions.
- Avoid becoming a sprawling manor house, and instead, evoke the traditional, rural aesthetics of the modest Martha’s Vineyard farmhouse.
DESIGN
- To meet the challenge of breaking down the large programmatic requirements, the house is conceived as a series of farmhouses and associated structures, such as the barn and the stable, that had grown organically over time.
- Various parts of the house are designed in distinct stylistic languages (shingle style, colonial, New England farmhouse).
- Architectural elements, such as galleries and covered walks, are employed to link the various components into a harmonious whole.
- The exterior stylistic language is reflected inside and provides each interior section of the house its’ own distinctive atmosphere.
- Because local codes limited building heights and stipulated minimum roof pitches, dormers and complex roof profiles are incorporated to maximize usable second floor spaces.
