元新 GROUNDWORK at Hawkerama Exhibition Hong Kong 2012

Hawkerama, an exhibition curated by Kong Kong artist Kacey Wong, continues to explore the existence of hawkers. “

We are participating because we feel that it is the right thing to do to preserve such an interesting facet of Hong Kong culture. Otherwise, what are we left with?”

The green coloured Pai-dong(hawkerstands) were once lining our streets with life, interactions and joy. Pai-dong’s distinctive green colour and its versatility were the symbol of Hong Kong urban development. Pai-dong existed since the 1930s, before the World War II. Pai-dong were like seeds that have been scattered and imbedded deeply within the Hong Kong’s urban and social fabric. These seeds were incubated and business prospered; the Pai-dong conglomerated, and thus forming markets.

Our studio have embarked on a journey to understand Pai-dong, Hong Kong's unique heritage. Our heritage may not be recreated, but it may be reflected. Our intervention is merely an apparatus that would allow the surrounding to be represented. The size of the installation is is 1(W) X 1(L) X 2 (H)meters; one quarter of the Hong Kong Government's prescribed footprint for the future Pai-dong boundary.

The first Hawkerama was held on 15 July 2012.
