Name that Architect and Building!!!

5009
SDR

Sweet illustration. Actually, the architect is Furness and Evans -- but you're on the money. The National Bank of the Republic building (1884) was later sold to Philadelphia Clearing House, who hired Furness, Evans and Co. to alter the building (1904). It was demolished in 1953.

i recognized it slightly... had to think about where i saw it from... found it concretely by remembering only that it was a bank in philidelphia, though i should have known more about it. Sullivan worked for furness i believe, and its obvious that he was pretty heavily influenced by his work. the massing of that bank in particular is very sullivan like in my opinion, though more frivolous.
i might be off, im not as well versed with people like furness and sullivan as i should be... sad considering im surrounded by amazing sullivan projects

That looks like H.H. Richardson, but I'm not at all sure.

Regarding the National Bank of the Republic, it is Robert Venturi that made the building well known in Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture. When Sullivan worked for Furness, the office was on the same block (300 Chestnut Street) as the National Bank of the Republic (or it was the next block west).

geez, i tried to keep it fairly obscure. shouldn't have dropped the zumthor reference. i have no clue who built that project. looks like early 20th c. berlin/amsterdam.

Another hint: Munich 1956, but you are right Holz Box: train of thought from the early 20th.

eww, this building looks like a built herman munster. as if albert speer designed cute little weekend residences in the 1930s...

hmmm, if it wasn't '56 i'd say a possibility but he was serving out his time in spandau then, thankfully.

It is Paul Schmitthenner, Frankona Insurance in Munich (1956).
Schmitthenner was one of the teachers at the Stuttgart School and planned the garden city in Staaken. Thereafter a somewhat mixed history read more.
