Hell, Vapor's portfolio looks better than half the shit I've seen pinned up in Avery Hall.

wow kristin, are you sure you're not describing my life? Because that's it, right down to the clusterfuck. Actually, my boss just said "cluster-F" to be polite, but otherwise we seem to be having the exact same week.

New York City is looking better and better to me.... I have friends there, my church is there, and I miss walking around the city. Having a year off to save up some money and not worry about classes would be most welcome, as well.

vapor, congrats. Sounds like you've had to endure some hits to get where you are today, but it is well-deserved, as your portfolio is stellar. I think I will nominate you for "Best Underdog Story of Page 29"....

;o)

vapor, that was a great portfolio for a M.arch 1... I work in NYC for and with Columbia grad's ... your portfolio is better than most of theirs... so maybe the person you met with was just exduding a bit of snottery.

best of luck to all of you still waiting...

my back up plan is to pack up all my stuff and move to Denver to be closer to family...and figure out what to do with my life now that my dream is crushed. i'll probably have to work the streets to pay rent.

was the portfolio you showed a rough draft? I've definitely talked to people who can't get past the little things like needing to reshoot a model or flesh out the text and get all your stupid margins to do what you want consistantly. I got told by the Tyler School of Art that "your presentation needs to get about a thousand times better to get into an MFA program." And guess what? Now I've gotten into two of them!

does anyone have a link to a site that talks about portfolio restraints for different schools? it must have been talked about! i'm gearing up for next year's apps.

rationalist- the contents were more or less final.
but the pages were not trimmed, and were held together with binder clips.

geimanj - do you mind sharing your portfolio?

Mar 13, 07 4:16 pm  ·

8-2 - Yeah. I'll definitely put it up here in a bit. Gotta PDF it.

Mar 13, 07 4:33 pm  ·

vapor- that's exactly the stuff I'm talking about. Some people are just too narrow minded to mentally adjust for it only being 80-90% done, and sit there thinking, "jesus, he didn't even trim the margins, and it's held together with binder clips? There's no way this kid's getting in here," instead of looking past that junk.

Please tell me that everyone who's received a M. Arch I admission so far has a last name starting at the beginning of the alphabet...

Mar 13, 07 5:21 pm  ·

It seems to be working fine. They re-did it a little while back and in my opinion it is much worse than it was. Same info as before just a less refined layout and interface.

Mar 13, 07 5:21 pm  ·

i think the alphabet thing is irrelevant - i know 2 people admitted to yale whose last names are at the polar ends of the alphabet and they received emails within minutes of each other...

just curious, all M. Arch I applicants...how old are you and do you have any prior experience in the field? i'm 27 and have been working as the office manager at an arch firm for nearly two years. I've learned Revit and Sketchup, and included that as well as a painting and lots of photographs in my portfolio.

32 years old (as of yesterday)
Non-professional BA degree by the end of the summer
11 years work experience in architecture firms, up to job captain / project architect level

Hrm, their website is totally broken for me in both Firefox and Safari.

wow. ok, so...you're definitely getting in and i'm definitely NOT. Also, I've got a B.A. in a totally unrelated field.

27 years old. Pre-professional BA in arch. Been working at the same arch firm for almost 3 years. I get to work in nearly every aspect of the office and I have moved up quite a bit since I started. I am now running my own project with supervision from a project architect.

I'm 30, will be 31 in June.
I studied Art History undergrad.
Worked for a dot-com in NYC for 6 years, doing design, then web analytics. Have been doing freelance for 2 years.
My portfolio was primarily architectural, with drawing, photography and collage mixed in. It was all projects I came up with on my own after losing stuff to an apartment fire in 2001.

Happy Birthday LIG!

I'm 28, BArch (professional degree) undergrad, 5+ years as a graduate architect in firms, and I *still* have no mail in my mailbox. Harumph.

Accepted to Yale MArch II for me too...email notification...what a pleasant surprise!! I didn't think they'd dig my portfolio style, so to speak.

Oh lord, so many acceptances! Congratualtions everyone, but I must say that I am beginning to get a bit envious as I have yet to hear from any of my schools. I reeeaaaallly hope this whole "multiple wave theory" proves to be true : (

25, B.A. in Urban Studies (mostly social science), with a 5 course specialization in architecture. Office manager at 90-person architecture firm for 10 months, then the JumpStart summer architecture program at UCLA, then back to the same firm as an architectural intern since August.

My portfolio includes projects from my 2 intro undergrad studios, work from the UCLA program this summer, and some drawings and paintings from the 2 fine arts courses I took in college. Nothing from my current job (which is boring. I'm not even learning AutoCAD, just Microstation, which I will probably never use at any other job).

24. Non-Arch background (Film and American Studies) Working as an assistant at a TV Network. I think I've got to put some years into the field before I begin grad school but I figured I should at least apply. I have no interest in searching for another admin job but, alas, without any arch experience under my belt, that's all I'm qualified for. (Unless you know of any firms who really need a short film or research paper) Now that i think of it, does any one have any tips? I'm in the market for a job where I can learn something...

DRAT! I was really betting on that whole alphabet thing, since my last name starts with "y" and I haven't heard back from anyone! (Well, I *did* already get accepted to UIC for Urban Planning, but I applied for the dual-degree option and the architecture department has yet to admit me).

Still waiting for UCLA, GSD, GSAPP, MIT, and UPENN. Phew that's a lot of acronyms!

I can't believe in a matter of weeks some of you might be classmate-a-sauruses! Might! haha

(background: 24 yrs old, BFA in Museum Education, currently working in marketing department of large architecture firm)

Oh, and for whoever was asking....I'm 27, have a BFA in Industrial Design and do mostly freelance design work (although I've had some unrelated design jobs too). My portfolio did not have any architectural work in it.

Kalyani, I'm right there with you.

kristin_kai> I'm not applying to MArch programs, and I applied to different schools than most everyone else, which include CMU, USC, and the Bartlett in London. I did apply to UT Austin, but for the MSSD, which as far as I can tell, no one has been admitted for yet. Their web site says I wasn't supposed to hear anything until the end of March anyway. Phooey.
