Pester NCARB. And don't feel too bad about a wait of a few weeks or a month. Back when I did it they actually had a $400 "rush fee" for sending your record to the state in less than a YEAR after you finished IDP, if you reported all your experience toward the end of IDP (there weren't any expiration dates on experience back then.) And then when I applied for NCARB certification it took nearly 6 months, and every time I called they acted surprised that there was any time-sensitive need for it (uh, reciprocity?) They seem really proud of themselves these days for getting the average waits down to 6 weeks or so.
Man... there are several buildings on here that I truly enjoy... is that bad? Course, not sure on the validity of the "Survey". That longaberger basket building needs to go. Graves portland building is right there with it :) hahahaha
Ugliest buildings in every state... according to business insider.
couldn't get past denver airport, I could show pics of 50 colorado major buildings that are really ugly, the airport is not one of them, and tempe town hall is an amazing building, who did this list? your grandma and thayer-d?
Boston City Hall is a conceptual masterpiece. The entire city of Las Vegas should be on the list. In NY Johnson's AT&T and Lipstick, Hadid's High Line, Mayne's Cooper, etc. - too many candidates. Graves listed twice only because they had to make room for other candidates. The Longaberger is classic pop architecture, nice to see a developer repurposing it.

I feel you, Donna. A few years ago, I had a GMP project that the CM said would not be able to start on time if he didn't have our final CD set (not the GMP set) by a certain date. We worked our butts off to get it complete... then the CD set sat in the construction trailer for A YEAR while the crew worked on other portions of the building. Go figure.
Good firms exist, they really do! It's a joy to work with great people. That doesn't mean you won't spend half your day answering idiotic emails from idiotic bosses/coworkers/clients/contractors/consultants/owner's reps/product reps/subcontractors/marketing specialists/HR, but for the most part when you work with great people it makes those half days bearable!

Watch out, payment systems are easily and often abused by buyers. If they don't like something the charge is easily reversed with a complaint and then you're in the shit. One of my galleries had buyer complain they never got the piece despite a signed delivery receipt. Then the buyer filed an additional case just to confuse the issue. Took 6 months to sort it out.

You gotta wonder why they want to avoid the standard old check method. If it's a developer asking the question, you can bet they are up to no good.
Google Drive is the least intuitive program I've ever had to use. My non-profit board work all happens on Google Drive and I can't access a damn thing. I'm going to have to go in to the next Board meeting and telling them we're not using it any more, because anything they try to set up on it gets lost somewhere in the cloud. Ugh.

We use it as a way for PMs/PAs to keep a running to do list and assign members of the team to various tasks without being in office. If a team member finishes their pre-assigned task, they can look and see what their next task should be without bugging everyone else. Also nice because you can see what everyone is doing so you know who to ask for the info you need.
Took most of us quite a bit of trial and error to figure out how to use it and keep things efficient.

In architecture school, not that many moons ago, our critics would interrupt us all the time saying NOT to start statements with "I think" or "I feel". As a young woman, my female professors in particular would make a big point of getting us to speak confidently and decisively - not starting statements with an "I phrase", not using an upward questioning inflection, not saying "this might be a naive question but...", and just not having a waivering or touchy-feely tone to anything we said or wrote. It's surprising to me that this tone seems to be ok now. Maybe they're not specifically being taught to have that personal, emotional tone, and it's just that they're not being corrected when they do have it, in the general trend toward not upsetting anyone. Whatever the cause, that I-centricity will not serve them well when they enter the work world. Even when it doesn't come across as self-centered it makes them sound unsure of themselves or indecisive.
I bought a not-inexpensive beauty product this weekend that includes on the label an incorrect use of "it's". It made me despondent.

Aug 8, 18 1:18 pm ·

Our insurance company makes us go to something like that every year. It's not specifically intended to be architect charm school, so much as pounding into us how not to get into legal trouble and cost them money by revealing incompetence or being unclear or ambiguous or offensive - but that, not so surprising, overlaps quite a bit with observing etiquette and writing in sentences.
The number and intensity of history and theory in programs is decreasing in favor of more “technical” stuff, resulting in fess writing and composition and more fabbing. By the time they get to pro practice writing has been drummed out their heads.
Marc: This is one failing that really can't be blamed on architecture schools. Nine grade grammar and sentence structure should be enough to make sentences intelligible. Nouns and verbs should be familiar to all.
Typing is not writing. Writing is the careful consideration of what is committed to paper. It used to be that the ability to write was considered higher education and paper was expensive, not to be wasted. Penmanship was an art that reflected culture and education.
Now tweets are thoughtlessly typed out a million a minute as if every fart and belch in the stream of consciousness is worth it's weight in unobtanium.
The entire culture is circling the drain (not the one in the sink).
Typing is not writing. Writing is the careful consideration of what is committed to paper. It used to be that writing was considered higher education, paper was expensive, and penmanship communicated culture and refinement.

You want generational accusations? How about: Baby Boomers kleptomanically hoarded the economic output of the world for 40 years and now that they're reaching the end of their productive life they've slashed the redistributive safety net that helped them up and might have given the next cohort a fair chance so they can afford a third retirement condo.

If you really believe this is true, the job of those that really run the country (and the world) it's been a success. They give you a bunch of puppets to place the blame, all the while you keep buying their "stuff". Just my observation in California....it seems if “planning review” was simply does it meet zoning and ordinances vs. provide our self proclaimed city architect with a 90% CD set for pre-approval which he/she can deny approval based purely on their whims, and provide that same 90% CD set to multiple overlapping jurisdictions of City county, air quality board, Coastal Commision, Port authority where they apply their own interpretation of code per their benefit and then 10 years later you can build 10 luxury condos and 5 low income units. Maybe if developers could actually build, there’d be housing. Sounds more like a government issue than capitalism....but I’m just a know nothing ignorant conservative.

I have found EntreArchitect to be quite valuable for me. Mark LePage has done a great deal of work and provides an amazing amount of information for sole practitioners and small firms through his podcast, website and educational materials. Granted the facebook page is something that needs to be picked through. Many students seems to be on there and, yes, some people seem dumb sometimes. But, I am dumb often. So, there's that. The supportive environment is encouraging; especially for those architects who work alone all day in their basement offices. Keeping negativity and politics off the page is good thing. Even I can do it.

Yes, the internet seems like a swamp. But the reality is the US is a swamp and has been throughout its history. The internet just gives us more access to each other.
A hundred years ago, in 1917, the Liberty Bell went on a tour to the west coast: Over four months on the road, the Bell became a unifying symbol in a nation that had been increasingly divided. It went west across the northern United States, through Eastern and Midwestern cities wrestling with racism and anti-Semitism fueled by a backlash against immigrants from our wartime enemy, Germany, and then it continued through the Pacific Northwest, where Native Americans and Asian-Americans struggled for their rights. It returned through Southern California and the Southwest, where Native Americans from other tribes and Hispanics fought for inclusion, and then into the Deep South not long after the premiere of The Birth of a Nation, the lynching in Georgia of a Jewish factory manager named Leo Frank and the resurgence of the Ku Klux Klan.
When the bell left San Francisco a terrorist group (American terrorists) tried to bomb it with a suitcase bomb. When it pulled into a Midwest town the warehouses immediately in front of it were set on fire as a political statement. When a young black girl touched it a race riot broke out.
This country sucks. It always has. But we never give up hope, right? There's lots of good here too - just harder to see these days.

Sweet fucking christ on a cracker, Miles, and you too Chris you asshole, that's one of the most racist things I've ever read! Black US citizens don't need to "assimilate" into America, they ARE America! My friend who was born in the US of formerly Mexican parents doesn't need to goddam ASSIMILATE, she is an American as completely and totally as you are. What the everloving fuck?!?!? I'm hyperventilating over here. Jesus.
IT LITERALLY SAYS THE PHRASE Whites are reviled by those of lesser capacity RIGHT IN THE ARTICLE! WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU THINKING POSTING THIS DISGUSTING WHITE SUPREMACIST BULLSHIT HERE?!?
Chris, I didn't only pick up those parts. Any person who uses the argument that black americans need to "assimilate" into white america is so batshit crazy (meet kettle) that their arguments don't merit further attention.
You think it's all fucking hopeless yet you brought children into this world and gleefully dance amongst the chaos while imagining yourself as too smart to be harmed by it all? Try caring about something, Chris.

Sorry, Donna. I did post a warning. I was relating it to your swamp comment,

Donna, I think you've misinterpreted the article. You read assimilate in a Star Trek / Borg manner - the primary definition of the word is: take in (information, ideas, or culture) and understand fully.
Here's what I'm thinking, Miles, now that I've had a chance to sleep and I'm not hyperventilating: This week alone I've heard three very different people (Jonah Goldberg, righty; Steve Inskeep, lefty, and Russell Roberts, libertarian) all say essentially the same thing: the country is in a difficult place partly because we don't seem to have a shared sense of community, a center around which to gather, a common identity of what america is. (A lot of people say the church used to function in society's life in that way; I'd argue the public schools and 3 channels on TV did.) But not one of those people, or thousands of others ruminating on the same questions, had to prop up their argument with the completely insane belief that part of the problem is that black people aren't good at math. I mean, WTF?
And yes, I read assimilate properly. But black america IS america. Why aren't you and I being asked to assimilate into it? Why isn't it our duty as americans to do so?
Still hyperbolic. "Racial relations are a disaster. Blacks, fourteen percent of the country, are congenitally furious at whites. They neither assimilate nor want to."
You need to go on a media diet. All that crap you're reading is making you nutty. I dumped corporate media years ago and became much happier.

Miles, if you dumped corporate media to read sociopathic racist spew you're not doing anything better at all. Maybe *ask yourself* why are black americans angry?
Still hyperbolic. I see anger across the board - not confined to any particular racial category. EVERYBODY I know feels utterly abandoned and abused by the system, which is exactly the point of the article.

That article is a little crazy, but I don't anyone deserves the vitriol from Donna here. Personally I believe that the reason we have Trump and his ilk is primarily due to the massive superiority complex of the leftists. It seems that no one can disagree with the party line w/o being a Neanderthal or racist. Trumps ideology is a direct reaction to the dominance of the left wing on the coasts and normal media outlets.
The reason we have Trump is dissatisfaction with the government and its performance. > 95% of the time they go against the vast majority of citizens' interests, and they do it blatantly.
There is very little difference between 'left' and 'right' in politics, and what there is is defined by a few social issues. As far as war, corporate malfeasance, corruption and bribery, health care, etc. go they are all working for the same people, and it isn't us.

I think we all have way more common ground than anybody who pays a lot of attention to politics thinks. Maybe the new us vs them (instead of left vs right, whites vs nons) should be people who take everything way too seriously vs people who take things as they come and handle them with grace and poise (all the black people I personally know actually).
Divide and conquer is the name of the game. Black vs white vs brown, left vs right, conservative vs liberal, hetero vs whatever, religion vs religion, etc. By keeping us at each other's throats we don't band together and go after them.
Miles, the differences between the GOALS of the left and right are VAST. The practices of both sides are similar and gross. But when we had a Democratic president changes were made to benefit the poor and struggling. Now that we have a Republican president changes have been made that benefit the very wealthy. There is a vast difference in policy and the whole "left and right are the same" is pure dreck.
Also, shellarchitect: You’re right that’s it’s not appropriate for me to be as angry as I was. I'm always embarrassed after I do it but in the moment can't control myself. It’s a damn clear example of my white privilege: as a middle aged white lady, when I hear a dude spout full-on racism like “blacks aren’t good at science” and “whites are superior” it’s my white privilege that allows me to express how furious it makes me knowing full well that I won’t see any repercussions for expressing that anger. If my Asian-american friend responds to every random dude that mutters “Yoko” at her under their breath in the grocery store with the same kind of anger you can bet she wouldn’t be given the benefit of the doubt like I am. Which is why I feel I have to express it. What Miles posted was straight-up white supremacy. But even if I’m in the wrong, I’m not going to treat that kind of attitude with respect. It doesn’t deserve respect, it deserves to be brought into the light and shunned. America is not white. If I’m any kind of patriot at all – which I think I am – I’ll keep screaming at america’s white ethnonationalists that they are wrong, that they are bad people who should feel bad about themselves.
Donna: The difference between 'left' and 'right' citizens is wide - the difference left and right politicians is negligible. They both work for the same people and it's not us. Schumer is the Senator from Wall St. Pelosi is the senator from UnitedHealth Group. Hillary infamously said "single -payer will never happen".
When Bernie endorsed Hillary with the full knowledge that she illegally conspired and colluded with the DNC to sabotage his campaign it became apparent that he too is part of the corrupt system that required him as an Independent to run as a DEM because we are only allowed two parties. Nobody else is allowed to debate or gets any media coverage. Insider trading is illegal - unless you are a member of Congress (either party).
The Democrats platform? Get rid of Trump - not single-payer, not cutting the military, not repairing the infrastructure, not getting money out of elections. Instead they are pushing the Russian election interference hoax. The biggest interference in elections worldwide? The CIA, and it is public, factual, historical knowledge.
WAKE THE FUCK UP.

non, where ive been in lynn lake, the first nation population far outnumbers the pale face population. there are 178 kids enrolled in school. there was a conversation where someone said the english teacher took off early because only 25 kids (from kindergarten through high school) showed up. you guys deal with your problems a little different, but apparently you still have problems.
Miles, I don't disagree with a whole lot of what you said criticizing the Dems. But Hilary also stood in front of the world as Secretary of State and announced that fair treatment of women and girls needs to be a global concern. The Right *might* say this but they will *never* institute policies that actually work towards that goal. Never. The lesser of two evils might still be evil *but it's also less evil*. And don't tell me to wake up when you've announced that you not only don't follow mainstream media at all but, given that hideousness you linked to above, you DO follow wack-job conspiracy theorist racists. Didn't you once question vaccines as being unsafe and part of a Big Pharma conspiracy, too?
Stop with the conspiracy theory racist shit already. I’ve made it patently clear that I don’t subscribe or tolerate any of that, and others here don’t see what you do. So please, give it a rest. We’ve all got the point.
As SoS Hillary sold access and facilitated arms deals through the Clintion Foundation. Which is of course exactly why 30,000 emails were deleted and her server has never been examined by any authorities. Hillary (with Podesta) invented the Russian election as a way to derail Trump and advance the fortunes of the military industrial complex.
Speaking up for women is great, treasonously selling out your country not so much. Plus Bill was arguably the single worst president ever and what we are suffering now - Wall St. deregulation the great recession, corporate media consolidation, the disemboweling of domestic manufacturing, widening economic inequality, the Iraq wars, etc. can be laid directly at his feet. And don't forget DOMA, or all Hillary's gleefully cackling at Gaddafi's illegal (under both domestic and international law) assassination.
And yet if Hillary was president right now we wouldn't have two supreme court seats - one was stolen outright by the Republicans, of course - being seated by a deranged narcissist who's thrilled to destroy civil rights. YES Hillary and the Dems and Obama did bad things. But also YES the left side is fighting to bring our leaders further left than they have been heretofore. The right sure as hell isn't moving things leftward, and by eschewing both you're allowing the right to win. Proud of yourself?
Straw man. The racist bit is non-existent. Except for you apparently.
As to the rest - go ahead and keep thinking that one side is better than the other if it makes you feel better. Neither side serves you. If you find some small part of their lies to be reason to accept the corruption and destruction they really stand for, and cause to spew vitriol at anyone who disagrees, well, that speaks for itself.
Ruminating on the collapse of society (I won't use civilization, as that implies a widely held standard of responsible cultural behavior that I don't see):
People at the bottom will see very little difference and are best equipped to survive. Those at the other end have a long way to fall and an entirely alien world to adapt to.

I closed facebook and twitter, kept instagram for the pics, archinect for the snark. Taking the medium too seriously is also a big part of the problem. Do you remember how you had a lively discussion 20 years ago? Over a drink at a bar, after dinner at home, on a clasroom with students...not here.

Correct Wurdan, that's my point. It's lazy and/or sloppy to draft things with illogical dimensions. Junior staff and technologists here think they are pouring extra awesome sauce over the CDs by drafting to hard imperial/metric numbers (ie. 5/8" at 15.9mm instead of 16mm). No, now half the drawing is skewed slightly because your perp osnap'ed to an angled wall. But sure, set those walls at 3727mm O.C. (and set note critical to bout too eh!). At least I don't get laughed at by the GC when they get my drawings.

One of the advantages of old style hand drafting was that you used simple even dimensions because you were too lazy to add fractions.

What happened to people needing reading skills to function in a modern office? I mean, I know people can read and write, because they send me an email asking questions, but then when I answer them it's like they forget how to read because inevitably they will be back with the same question later. I've gotten to the point where I just attach the earlier email as my response.
There was noticeable consternation as they went from 140 characters to 240, including glum and gloom over how much people had to read in with in time they had.
But then people learned that like 140 characters, if you hate it, then skip it.
That 2018 EXAC thread that pops back up every 3 weeks or so makes me laugh. I get it that it's frustrating that there is very little online information on the exams' content, but that's the entire point. Either you know because of experience, or you don't. It's not a memorization or a design test.

... as are most art school application materials - or by someone somewhere in the 14-18 year old range anyway. What I meant was this work isn't particularly special for a high schooler's portfolio. It doesn't show mastery of any of the criteria one would hope for from a good 1-year general high school art sequence. It has its moments, but it's inconsistent - like the forms are pretty good in the fruit, but fall apart in the woman and especially in the fabrics, the light makes no sense anywhere and is merely distracting, the composition is stilted, and the colors don't cohere from part to part. It's not terrible, or even bad really, it's just not great either.
Yesterday I helped a friend doing maintenance on some solar panels and a new inverter on a couple of schools in south London, it was great to be on site but hard work and pleasurable. Today was a friends wedding reception at a North private school a pleasure also but the contrast was evident. (The private school had an actual grass playing field and a quite beautiful new building with a green roof) It’s pretty shitty that the same provisions are not provided.

NCARB taking their sweet time getting my record to the registration board...
This license is gonna be so anti-climactic.

I feel you. I finished all of my AREs at least a year before I had finished my experience/IDP. I just had to wait it out. So lame.
Same... passed my last ARE in February. Finished IDP at the beginning of this month. Now I'm just sittin' here...

Ugliest buildings in every state... according to business insider.

couldn't get past denver airport, I could show pics of 50 colorado major buildings that are really ugly, the airport is not one of them, and tempe town hall is an amazing building, who did this list? your grandma and thayer-d?
a sample
Boston City Hall is a conceptual masterpiece. The entire city of Las Vegas should be on the list. In NY Johnson's AT&T and Lipstick, Hadid's High Line, Mayne's Cooper, etc. - too many candidates. Graves listed twice only because they had to make room for other candidates. The Longaberger is classic pop architecture, nice to see a developer repurposing it.
Luckily Archinect or Arch Daily can re-purpose this list in a couple years as "the most conceptually interesting buildings in every state."
Denver International Airport is one of the best structures I've ever been fortunate enough to be in. Its what I imagine is going through Calatrava's head when he's designing...
The casino in Detroit is the only one that really made me shudder. The little Keokie Credit Union is adorable! Not good, but charming somehow.
I thought the longaberger building was cool when I was 7 and my mom had a longaberger basket...
The one that offended me the most was the Marina Towers in Chicago being listed as dishonorable mention...
Brief rant: On June 14 I got a frantic email from a contractor that electrical rough-in locations were needed by June 15 or the whole project would grind to a halt. I complied, construction has been ongoing.

I'm quietly shedding a small tear... but happy for you :) congrats!
Tear? Why?
wurdan, I am still doing things on my own too, if that's what you are sad about.
Yes tintt. That's what I was sad about glad to here. Thumbsup!
I hope they don't eventually want to make you commute down there. I-25 is a terrifying drive as you well know.
I interviewed with them several years ago and they wanted me to commute then and I said no. If I have to go down there, I'm going to see if I can get paid for driving time. :) Funny, I went to meet with them on Monday morning last week and there was not much traffic. The drive was so gorgeous. I wondered where everybody was??? On vacation?
heh, I love this new firm culture, very good vibe. Oh, yeah, I telecommute : )

anyone accept online payments for their work?
how does it work for you?
had a couple ask and just wondering...
zelle works great... limited to 5k per payment.
Took 6 months to sort it out.
do clients find it that convenient to want to pay the 3% fee? (The reverse charges business certainly isn't a problem I want to add to the already decent list of issues of getting paid...thx for the reminder of that one)
You gotta wonder why they want to avoid the standard old check method. If it's a developer asking the question, you can bet they are up to no good.
Is anyone else ready to submit to our new rampaging goat overlords?
I like goats. The baby ones are super cute.
Men who stare at goats was a pretty good movie
Google Drive is the least intuitive program I've ever had to use. My non-profit board work all happens on Google Drive and I can't access a damn thing. I'm going to have to go in to the next Board meeting and telling them we're not using it any more, because anything they try to set up on it gets lost somewhere in the cloud. Ugh.
In the height of typical "old lady ranting at kids to get off her lawn" symbolism, my 15 year old showed me how to navigate google drive. I still hate it, tho.
What's confusing about it? It's a bunch of folders, or maybe I, another old lady, is missing something...
I love google drive, but my wife can’t get her head around it. We don’t use it in my office thou. Sucks when files are sent without read or editing rights.
Were you accidentally logged in to a different user? That gets annoying quickly.
I detest everything Google and avoid it as much as possible. When something is "free", you are the product.
All this computerization was/is supposed to make our lives easier. When even college graduates with way above average intelligence struggle and have to abandon a program, something is wrong with that program. Why Silicon Valley insists on making products more complicated and cumbersome is beyond me. Well, actually, I do know why: $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Gotta add unasked for necessary features to justify the cash they get from investors, the prices they charge for software (or ad placement) , and the salaries they pay their pets.

So, the "I Feel"-thread has been locked...and who couldn't handle criticism now? Oh the irony, 316+ posts because a newbie critiqued regulars' online behaviour @_@
Hmm, locking. That only comes from the highest level of mod, I believe...what in the old days we called The Big Green Head.
Interesting, but probably for the best...nothing new was being added to the discussion anymore, a thread with 4 stomachs like a cow, throwing up old stuff and chewing on it again.
At least the dumpster fire is immortalized.
That kid started some other threads last night using a different name. Ironically they were full of profanity - after all the indignation he expressed over others' use of it in his portfolio thread! I guess then his boy-scout guilt kicked in though, and he deleted the whole account by this morning. But then he created yet another one to post RB Astoria's picture in 10 threads, so... he may need some more locking or purging or spanking. Edit: yay! at least some of them have disappeared too. Thanks mom-mod!
A new drinking game: take a shot every time someone under 30 begins a sentence with "I feel like..." and your liver will look like a flat tire by dinner time.
(Not a rant about youngsters themselves, but their lazy teachers and parents who must have encouraged this.)
I was really playing that while reading the feely thread a couple evenings ago. The number of first-person words used by the kid (I, I've, I'm, I'd, I'll, Me, My, Mine) exceeded those used collectively by everyone else in the thread combined by more than 3 times. I had to stop reading to avoid alcohol poisoning.
It's as if Last Chance U came to Archinect.

Rant. How do people have masters degrees but can't even write basic sentences? Every sentence is a frigging crime scene.
Programs with an intense specialization often ignore any qualifications (or lack of..) outside of that specialization.
The previous several posts were auto-generated by spam bots. The one before that was created by an angry teen. No masters degrees involved.

Not that that's a reasonable excuse, just a sad state of reality. It amazes me how many designers can create parametrically complex geometries in Rhino but can't solve a simple algebraic equation.
Similarly, I do not understand why some people can't seem to put together a coherent professional email. Why is a class on office etiquette not required as part of pro practice?
Our insurance company makes us go to something like that every year. It's not specifically intended to be architect charm school, so much as pounding into us how not to get into legal trouble and cost them money by revealing incompetence or being unclear or ambiguous or offensive - but that, not so surprising, overlaps quite a bit with observing etiquette and writing in sentences.
The number and intensity of history and theory in programs is decreasing in favor of more “technical” stuff, resulting in fess writing and composition and more fabbing. By the time they get to pro practice writing has been drummed out their heads.
*less writing
Marc, more fabbing or fapping?
Marc: This is one failing that really can't be blamed on architecture schools. Nine grade grammar and sentence structure should be enough to make sentences intelligible. Nouns and verbs should be familiar to all.
geezer: Partially agreed. But no doubt curriculum and larger academic trends are stifling good writing. Citizen: that’s no concern of mine...
Or: “eeew”

Too many double negatives, you're saying a lot of Gen-X / Millennials will still live with their parents at 35+ ?
yeah... I see that now. Coffee is brewing and not yet in my cup... I even made 2 spelling mistakes writing that one sentence. Anyways, the article said that just under 5% expect their children to move out after age 35.
What about the number of parents who expect their architect children to move back in with them during the next recession?
just under 5% expect their children to move out after age 35
So the article says that 95% are expecting their children to remain at home past age 35? That seems way too high.
^no, that's not the case. There was a more reasonable breakdown for 25 and 30y groups. I just mention the most ridiculous one.
Should be read as: 95% expect their free-loading social studies part-time barista kids to be real adults and living on their own before age 35.
Oh is it "Blame the kids for the structural failings of late capitalism" time again? *cracks knuckles*
Get out of here with your tired "English degree barista" bullshit. There might be some anecdotal truth to it, but the underlying cause is more about gate-keeping and qualificaion-creep than about individual choices.
Bill Clinton, Al Gore, George W Bush, Mitt Romney, Hillary Clinton, and Donald Trump were all born between 1946-48. Maybe when the same group of people have been running the country for 30 years, they should accept at least an iota of blame for the state of things.
This will all be covered in my forthcoming book "Baby Boomers, the Actual Special Snowflakes."
someone assuming I'm boomer generation? I'm late gen X. tduds, will the book be adapted to a big blockbuster action movie?
I was talking to you, not about you. Although your assumption that generalizations be accepted or rejected based on their applicability you as an individual indicates some boomer tendencies ;)
^only on wednesdays. wait...
But what's the probability that two forum members have the same birthdate...?
50% when you randomly sample 23 people and 99% when you randomly sample 75 people.
Is that for birthday or birthdate?
day & month only. not year.
+1 on tduds rant. All of it. I tend to unleash some combination of choking/crying when a boomer complaines about Gen-X / millennial 'entitlement'.
If someone argues that Medicare is good but Obamacare is bad, it makes you a knob. Talk about wealth redistribution.
millenials on my left, boomers on my right, here I am
Tduds for the win!
Bill Clinton, Al Gore, George W Bush, Mitt Romney, Hillary Clinton, and Donald Trump were all born between 1946-48. Maybe when the same group of people have been running the country for 30 years, they should accept at least an iota of blame for the state of things.
If you really believe this is true, the job of those that really run the country (and the world) it's been a success. They give you a bunch of puppets to place the blame, all the while you keep buying their "stuff". As a plus, they invent a "generational divide", so you can hold arms with others around your age with whom you have nothing in common other than a time stamp. good job.
"If you really believe this is true, the job of those that really run the country (and the world) it's been a success."
...they were all born in the mid 1940s also.
That's a nice-looking project. Plus awesome fries? Win-win!
Chi also has that super-sized McD's, too, that is somehow entrancing to me...
I must have missed that whole thread.
It had potential. Some start-up real estate guy wanted some code case-studies and explanation for a 4 storey retail building in NYC. Something about having one the the 2nd required path of all upper floors run through the lower occupied floor. He claimed the architects he "hired" could not figure it out.
Been spending some time on the entrearchitect Facebook group lately.... Holy crap there are a lot of really dumb architects out there!!!
Facebook is going down anyway
Details, please! Examples!
I've sent in an application to join... maybe I can report more from the inside.
This is a group of growth, support and encouragement. We reserve the right to remove any post or block any member at any time for any reason. Thanks for cooperating.
It's a fucking safe space?
Whitewashed of all information that conflicts with the official story.
There are some very helpful an valuable posts there, about professional practice and advice for dealing with clients or contractors or work-life balance. It mostly feels like sole-proprietors, which is appropriate for it being about entrepreneurship. Not a lot of corporate firm employees are posting there! But it does often remind me that even though most of the architects *I* know lean left, a whole lotta them also lean right.
Even I can do it.
off the top of my head from the last week....
architect trying to figure out what a protected construction type is, Type IIA vs IIB....
Arch has somehow won a hotel job and is asking what they need to show on CD's.....
Detailing, some of the questions are pretty reasonable, some of the answers are terrible
About once or twice a year I throw my back out.... by drafting ferociously. Anyone relate?
Use a lighter pencil.
I'll raise it! I got a lumbar hernia 25 years ago, at the time it was recommended not to try surgery - worked for 10 years on drafting tables, that was painful- now it's only when I sit for too long in front of this thing. driving for more than 6 hours does it too. Only thing to get it fixed is walking or biking.
I hit the couch and the rose (pink wine).
also, the aeron chair is not that good, or maybe it's just old and the fabric is sagging.
The negative space thread is flypaper for idiots.
Sometimes I feel that way about Archinect. Scaling up: the entire system of pipes is a playground for the mentally incompetent.
I think I helped a little...
While at a meeting at City Hall to discuss The Building Code our local authority having jurisdiction stated to me, in reference to a code, "Its not meant to be read the way it was written.
I was speechless.
I'm sure they were really f'ing smug about it too
Exactly. And tomorrow you'll get a different interpretation. Or you could talk to someone else there today and get one immediately.
I've had a plan review returned to me twice now stating that neighbor notification letters need to be submitted. The first time I contacted the head bldg supervisor and pointed to his attention that the letters were already uploaded to the cities database available for anyone with an internet connection to view... He acknowledged the oversite... I'm not sure what to say this time... value add...
Thought of the day: the Internet is the world's virtual cesspool.
I thought that was the moto for the last 30 years?
keep going, I'm all ears; it took us a bit over 20 years to find this out. How do you think it should be fixed?
The traditional 'fix' would be to pump it out. I supposed the digital equivalent of that would be to erase all content. The right virus could do the job. Think of it as an anaerobic microbial treatment.
Here you go Miles: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FrEdbKwivCI
kind of "drain the swamp"? I completely agree with you, but I don't think it can be fixed without a major social uproar - it's also part of a race to see what crumbles first, society or planet? will the tenants pay the damages before leaving?
X is the world's virtual cesspool, where X = any and every communication medium ever devised, given enough time.
Solution: make the personal choice to turn it off on a regular basis.
citizen, how old are you? do you remember how you communicated with anybody 30 years ago? the toxicity of today is unprecedented. the medium is what's toxic. and attracts the green lagoon monsters.
I agree that the web is much more efficient and far-reaching than other media, yes. But I also have seen newspapers, radio, tv, popular literature and even art suffer this same argument over the last generation.
This crisis is more of culture and manners than of communications. Clear and reboot the internet? Go for it. But the cesspool really resides inside the noggins (and dark hearts) of a billion or two people, and they aren't going anywhere.
if we keep at this pace (on any subject you choose), in 200 years we'll all be gone, forever. problem solved.
If we reboot, the calm and peacful void we create will soon be filled up again by Balkins within minutes...It'll be like a shooting star, blink, and you'll miss it.
I don't think a billion or two have dark hearts ... but I may very well be wrong. And 200 years is waaaay optimistic (or pessimistic, depending on your POV).
An excellent point, Miles. Not even a billion... likely (hopefully) far fewer. Maybe that's the point of the web angle: its efficiency can magnify and multiply the bad stuff so greatly.
said 200 to cover all possible scenarios, like 100 years under the trumputin dynasty, but yes, hopefully it will be less than that.
who is surprised?
Wait a minute... there's porn on the internet?
Yes, the internet seems like a swamp. But the reality is the US is a swamp and has been throughout its history. The internet just gives us more access to each other.
This excellent article in The Smithsonian struck me recently: https://www.smithsonianmag.com...
There's lots of good here too - just harder to see these days.
the world has always been pretty f'up up. It's also a far better place today then ever before. life in the 1900's was brutal for even the most elite compared to today
You're probably too young to remember life before cell phones, among other things.
Interesting read here, easy to interpret as racist but I don't think it's intended that way.
https://www.unz.com/freed/decl...
I hate you for posting that. I had so much respect for you before Miles but it is long gone now.
Chris, I didn't only pick up those parts. Any person who uses the argument that black americans need to "assimilate" into white america is so batshit crazy (meet kettle) that their arguments don't merit further attention.
And the phrase is "could HAVE predicted" you stupid fucking roidhole.
You think it's all fucking hopeless yet you brought children into this world and gleefully dance amongst the chaos while imagining yourself as too smart to be harmed by it all? Try caring about something, Chris.
I'm logging off to go continue reading the How To Change Your Mind book because I truly DO believe we're all connected by something beautiful and powerful and that a loving world is worth fighting for.
Sorry, Donna. I did post a warning. I was relating it to your swamp comment, and in that respect tension between races is quite relavent. Dismissing the entire
Sorry, Donna. I did post a warning. I was relating it to your swamp comment, and in that respect tension between races is quite relavent. Dismissing the entire
article on that basis is a bit over the top, the rest of it is quite sharp and accurate. Even a broken clock is correct twice a day,
Donna, I think you've misinterpreted the article.
I think you'all need to take a vacation up north. It's nice here and we're in the process of creating a new statuary holiday to highlight the horrible treatment of the aboriginal population at the hand of the catholic church through it's residential schools.
Miles, if you dumped corporate media to read sociopathic racist spew you're not doing anything better at all. Maybe *ask yourself* why are black americans angry?
Still hyperbolic. I see anger across the board - not confined to any particular racial category. EVERYBODY I know feels utterly abandoned and abused by the system, which is exactly the point of the article.
up north? where everyone is white, Christian, and can spell?
That article is a little crazy, but I don't anyone deserves the vitriol from Donna here. Personally I believe that the reason we have Trump and his ilk is primarily due to the massive superiority complex of the leftists. It seems that no one can disagree with the party line w/o being a Neanderthal or racist. Trumps ideology is a direct reaction to the dominance of the left wing on the coasts and normal media outlets.
^good point
The reason we have Trump is dissatisfaction with the government and its performance. > 95% of the time they go against the vast majority of citizens' interests, and they do it blatantly. There is very little difference between 'left' and 'right' in politics, and what there is is defined by a few social issues. As far as war, corporate malfeasance, corruption and bribery, health care, etc. go they are all working for the same people, and it isn't us.
Agreed miles
I think we all have way more common ground than anybody who pays a lot of attention to politics thinks. Maybe the new us vs them (instead of left vs right, whites vs nons) should be people who take everything way too seriously vs people who take things as they come and handle them with grace and poise (all the black people I personally know actually).
Divide and conquer is the name of the game. Black vs white vs brown, left vs right, conservative vs liberal, hetero vs whatever, religion vs religion, etc. By keeping us at each other's throats we don't band together and go after them.
Thats why I don't listen to the news. Ever.
Thus my advice to Donna above.
Also, sir batshit is an asshole, he knows he's an asshole, he's proud of his asshole persona. I don't feel bad about saying that at all.
"I’ve made it patently clear that I don’t subscribe or tolerate any of that" when you share it you not only tolerate it YOU PROMOTE IT!
This is pointless. I'm done. Good luck.
I'm sorry we're fighting so hard Miles but we have deeply different world views obviously. I'll stop too.
Ruminating on the collapse of society (I won't use civilization, as that implies a widely held standard of responsible cultural behavior that I don't see):
People at the bottom will see very little difference and are best equipped to survive. Those at the other end have a long way to fall and an entirely alien world to adapt to.
Rhetoric and manifestos will surely save no one. And the "unattached" liberals will be forced to dip their peckers in politics, oh the horror..... is there a parametric heaven they could escape to?
20 years folks, make'em count! https://www.charismanews.com/opinion/72734-mit-computer-model-predicts-civilization-will-end-in-2040
Architects are great at false equivalency. Just something I've noted while banging around this industry for a couple decades...
terrorism, racism, financial fall-out, GMO's, congress, etc

Hear, hear
i had poutine with mozzarella instead of cheese curds in thompson manitoba last night. is that an approved substitution in canada?
Shredded mozzarella is a suitable alternative where curds are scarce... only then. No one would choose that over curds but it’s better than nacho cheese sauce. 8-)
Side note, not using curds is a federal crime in Quebec.
Did I miss something, did Chris leave or was he ausradiert?
I thought it was kind of quiet.
Seems like his posts have vanished. Maybe Olaf will be resurrected from the ashes?
I didn't do anything, seriously. This goes way above me.
I closed facebook and twitter, kept instagram for the pics, archinect for the snark. Taking the medium too seriously is also a big part of the problem. Do you remember how you had a lively discussion 20 years ago? Over a drink at a bar, after dinner at home, on a clasroom with students...not here.
In other, more uplifting news, SHE TOO! poor tony.....
I'm being asked to help on one of our large projects and it's unfortunately in imperial... eugh. This is going to be rough. Apologies in advance for any dumpster fires I may cause to distract me from this misery.
What's the problem - are you drawing everything 25.4 times too big?
The world is metric, our standards are metric, our drawings are metric... now I have to fuss around with 43/64" dims.
Hmm... if you've got 43/64" dimensions to fuss with, wouldn't you have been fussing with those things in metric anyway? It's not like that's equivalent to anything neater in centimeters.
It's not equivalent to anything... you're right. Just makes it easier for sloppy drafting with the - Oh, dim styles just round off the 1/4 inch, so who cares if it's off - It's a god -sean connery - damn grid line. how hard is it to offset 20'-3" and keep it there? Anyways, using decimal points in metric brings out equal levels of rage.
I see. So if I were to write "Toward a Rage-Free Architecture" I'd want to stress a design based on whole units.
same goes for accounting... pennies are fucking worthless...
drafting should be as precise as possible, but dimensions should never include fractions of an inch... that's just dumb. When I'm laying out a wall and the archie's tow dimension says something like 89'-11 7/8"... me and the concrete guy just laugh.... ahahahahaha... stupid architect... :)
Yes sponty, that's a good start.
what's a dumbass from canada?
a can-idiot
what's a really dumb, dumbass from canada?
a fa-can-idiot
hmmm... there's just no replacing chris... is there...
Pennies? Dollars. Or 1.30882 in Canadian (metric).
That's way too many decimal points. Metric money makes me angry.
Stop hiring perps?
This was a worthy distraction.
You're lucky if you can find a concrete guy in Chicago who will work to 2" tolerance, let alone 1/16"
I made some money correcting lines that were rotated to .0001 angles. Life of a mid-level architect. Yeesss.
yes, metric is all pretty, but even in the civilized world those damn wood studs are still being planed at 139.7 mm.
Oh, they better be. That 0.3mm is important when factoring in rentable area.
One of the advantages of old style hand drafting was that you used simple even dimensions because you were too lazy to add fractions.
I still use simple, even dimensions.
For those dying to know.... Wurdan won the poet contest with the cry out to the bricks with pic. CONGRATS!!!!
oh, I talked to Chris.
so they just nuked all his posts and erased all records that he ever existed?
Yeah
#neverforget
we should set up a Gofundme page for him.
He really went a bit overboard with that Russian thread a while back, so maybe the Russians threatened to release a compromising video or something.
My therapist suggested to me today that drinking wine and posting on Archinect in the eveningns was probably not the most healthy of ways to manage my anxiety. She's right, of course.
(That said, I honestly didn't have anything to do with Chris disappearing.)
what else would you do with your anxiety?
Time to get a breathalyzer for your keyboard.
LOL Miles that's funny. I do enjoy your sense of humor.
I prefer half a donkey tranquilizer and a bit of meth before I log on. Tomato, tomahto.
R. Balkins, Esq. is at it again.
Furiously resisting the urge to bitch slap him. Never had a job and he's an authority on partnerships.
I did poke him a little.
I think there's a vacancy in the White House legal staff opening up.
He did have a job once: movie theater janitor. You don't see the natural trajectory to partnership attorney?
What happened to people needing reading skills to function in a modern office? I mean, I know people can read and write, because they send me an email asking questions, but then when I answer them it's like they forget how to read because inevitably they will be back with the same question later. I've gotten to the point where I just attach the earlier email as my response.
Happy Wednesday, TC
Who has time to read more than one line? Twitter should be reduced to 32 characters. Even that would probably be too much for some.
This is the second paragraph, most people won't bother to read it. I wonder if they even know that it exists.
I started by reading the 2nd paragraph.
Yes, but you wisely wrote only one line.
There was noticeable consternation as they went from 140 characters to 240, including glum and gloom over how much people had to read in with in time they had.
But then people learned that like 140 characters, if you hate it, then skip it.
So it turns out yesterday was the 20th anniversary of my husband and I getting married.
We both forgot about it, LOL.
We're going out to a nice dinner this weekend, instead.
congrats DS...my 20th was this year too and instead of a trip somewhere we made it a nice dinner out w/out the kid (altho we both remembered)
20... nice. Congrats. We had our 17th dating anniversary last week (6y married).
Congrats!
That 2018 EXAC thread that pops back up every 3 weeks or so makes me laugh. I get it that it's frustrating that there is very little online information on the exams' content, but that's the entire point. Either you know because of experience, or you don't. It's not a memorization or a design test.
My "$38,000 Art School" Which doesn't actually cost $38,000...Just went to the art exhibit today. Just because I suck doesn't mean everyone at my school does! Graduates frequently get into RISD, Arts Center, and more!
RISD and Arts whatever are nothing to brag about. They take anyone willing to pay
Jackson, behave yourself this time or screen shots will go to your parents - both of whom have current contact info publicly available and very easily findable. (Don't believe me? Did you or didn't you buy your mommy a doll last week?)
@ 10974ks--- If you don't know what you're talking about, it's best to keep your mouth shut.
RISD is one rated as one of the top art schools in the world. Their acceptance ratio is about 30% and they have generous scholarships for those who can't afford the cost.
Is that you John Wayne?
that chinese crowd is very good
how much it actually cost?
.
Powerful.

meh. There's no understanding of light in particular, or color, composition, or anatomy. It's not substantially worse than most art school application stuff but nothing noteworthy.
Yes but this was painted by a 16 year old
... as are most art school application materials - or by someone somewhere in the 14-18 year old range anyway. It's not terrible, or even bad really, it's just not great either.

off topic note- the coolest painting I did see in the gallery was a painting of someone painting a painting
As in a Charles Edward Chambers self-portrait type? Or an Escher hands-drawing-hands thing?
it was a hands drawing hands thing
Yesterday I helped a friend doing maintenance on some solar panels and a new inverter on a couple of schools in south London, it was great to be on site but hard work and pleasurable. Today was a friends wedding reception at a North private school a pleasure also but the contrast was evident. (The private school had an actual grass playing field and a quite beautiful new building with a green roof) It’s pretty shitty that the same provisions are not provided.
