Working closely with the client, consultants, and contractor on an aggressive timeline, Loci transformed a dated 1930s-era parochial school and sanctuary space into a K-12 school for children with speech and language challenges. Our design sought to strike a balance between the building’s heavy architectural details and its new, energetic occupants. We placed a multi-use auditorium space and sensory gym in the former sanctuary, illuminating the ceilings and stained-glass windows with sculptural lighting designed by Sighte Studio. The corridor ceilings, criss-crossed by low beams, are painted in varying shades of blue, contrasting with technicolor floor accents and lightening up the circulation to lend whimsy to the wayfinding. A deep debt of gratitude to JFK&M Consulting for designing a fully-centralized MEPF system to fit the tight space.
