Things are a lot different this semester, for the last year i've had the same studio space on the first floor with fairly new, fast, efficient computers. This semester however I found myself in a fairly undesirable studio space with no computers or internet access. the most challenging change to the semester would have to be my studio critic that i will be debating with all semester. Paul Amatuzzo, while i am i bit excited to be in his studio, i realized after today's class how much of a pure modernist he is. He stated today that he will not accept any conceptual, metaphorical solution to the problem. Bare bones all about tectonics and structure, I guess we see what compromise me and Prof. Amatuzzo come too”¦”¦.but I guess I'm just ranting.
Anyway, our project this semester is a equestrian center on 66th and Columbus, the main purpose of this semester is two-fold 1) to deal with long-span spaces, 2) to actually get into details like real building sections. I also understand that we will have some structural engineers on our final crit almost like a real life situation
our site, we get to knock down this building
this is one of the buildings across the street. i thought it was pretty cool the facade is made of terracotta

What ever happened to adaptive re-use? Those are some horse sized openings in that existing building.
sean if your prof doesnt want concepts, has you dealing with long spans, and will bring in structural engineers i suggest just using a premanufactured steel building and tweaking it to fit your programmatic needs. check into a company such as nucor and you can be sleeping easy while all your peers are sweating it out. good luck
