This project was to remodel and renovate an existing occupied and operational 7,750-SF wing and provide 855 SF of new expansion space on the fifth floor of Building 1 at the VA San Diego Medical Center. The project scope was to maximize the number of single patient rooms in the 5-E Wing (POD D). Our scope was architectural and interior design services for the new use of four multi-patient rooms and ancillary rooms. The design reconfigured the lobby, computer space/terminals, storage areas, 30-32 private in-patient rooms, and bathrooms. New spaces consisted of isolation-type patient rooms, support and administrative areas, clean supply room, soiled utility, and general storage. The design included repairs and modifications to the architectural, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and interior finish systems, as well as structural anchorage for equipment. Life safety upgrades included means of egress, occupant loads, exit paths, floors, and emergency lighting. Electrical design included power upgrades, lighting, data, and communications. Through the construction administration phase I reviewed submittals and issued RFIs/ASIs under an experienced architect
