With over 30,000 riders daily and built more than 25 years ago, the station’s leading challenges include poor visibility from adjacent roadways, limited sightlines within the station, gaps in circulation, congestion of platform and vertical circulation, and a generally unfriendly patron environment.

The focal point of the new station will be a Civic plaza. The station’s new configuration will also include new canopies, improved multi-modal circulation, and an extended platform. A new Mobility/Bike Hub, Park and Ride, improved bus loading bays, improved lighting, a Transit Security and Customer Service Center and improved signage are features of the project.
Most of the current station sits under an eight-lane elevated freeway. A platform extension and the only track crossing connecting the two sides of the station will be extended from under the freeway and into the daylight. Station enhancements include overhead lighting, pedestrian lighting, downlighting under freeway, and in-pavement light sources.

Currently, almost 90 percent of station patrons transfer between the two light rail lines, never setting foot in the larger station area. The primary urban gesture is the pedestrian promenade connecting a newly developed community hospital, medical university, shopping center, and the neighborhoods on both sides of the station. A new customer service center will provide services to patrons in the region. The bike hub will provide not only secure bicycle parking, but will also offer a small retail center and the opportunity for cycling-related classes in partnership with local bike clubs.
