My thesis project at Delft University entailed the conversion of the co-operative hospital building De Volharding (perseverance) into a center for the arts. The building was originally designed by the modernists J. Buijs and J. Lürsen. The building was split in a hospital section and an outpatients clinic.
The design rearranges the entrance sequence of the original building around a new atrium space at the rear in order to draw light deep into the building. The exhibition spaces are located in the former hospital and laboratory rooms at the front of the building and connected as an enfilade. This allows the rooms to be used as a single exhibition space. A new wing with artists' studios is abutting the corner tower; it forms a transparent counterpoint to the dark brick of the original structure. This wing gradually steps down to accommodate the scale jump to the smaller buildings in the side street.
