This project is built on the site of the 2015 East Village gas explosion and located in the East Village/Lower East Side Historic District. Thomas Wensing, together with Graeme Sowerby, developed the facade idea. The original tenement building had been erected in Queen Anne style, and featured elaborate brick detailing. Inspired by the plasticity and lively shadows of the original masonry, a checkered brick pattern in special bricks was developed for this project.
