PROJECT NARRATIVE: Ryder Design worked closely with the client, a growing family interested in outdoor living, to extensively remodel and construct a new addition to the existing single-family home. The design clarified the public and private wings of the home and unified the rooflines using a single standing seam metal gable that wraps both sides and holds the house below like ‘a gloved hand.’ Ribbon windows, unique wrapping skylights and large glass openings allow the home to capitalize on the Southern California climate and embrace the outdoor lifestyle. A contemporary homage to the traditional pitched roof, this contemporary design employs elements of rhythm and materiality to compliment the surrounding context while simultaneously standing out on its own.
