Myrtle Beach Primary School Renovations

Horry County Schools

Completion Date

August 2015

Project Budget

$1.78 million

Myrtle Beach Primary School, one of 40 schools in the Horry County Schools network, is home to approximately 1,000 kindergarteners and first graders. Quackenbush Architects worked with the school district to renovate and unify this 100,000 square foot school that has endured 3 major additions over the last 30 years. The scope of the project included a complete finishes update, minor renovations to address safety and security concerns and code issues, and a rework of their existing playground areas.  Quackenbush Architects collaborated with a local Myrtle Beach firm, e3 Studio, to update the finishes throughout the school.  New finishes included carpet, paint, casework and solid vinyl flooring. Bright accents of color were used to break up the long classroom corridors. Colored squares of solid vinyl tile and bold paint were used at the entrance of each classroom to serve as a ‘welcome mat’ and clearly define the entry for the students. The existing media center, located at the center of the school, was transformed into a more defined, collaborative, technology-focused learning commons that utilizes flexible furnishings, writeable walls and smartboards. The existing playgrounds, which were originally elevated above grade, were redesigned to be more organic and accessible.  Construction of this project took place during the summer of 2015 and was completed in time for the 2015-2016 school year.
