Contemporary Aleutian residences are extremely expensive to build and maintain and do not respond to the environment in which they occupy. This proposal is for a compact three-bedroom home that has been designed with features that reap the benefits of the local climate. The design evolved from what is currently an architectural staple of the local Anak village, the ubiquitous A-frame house. Through the study of Scandinavian vernacular architecture, a scheme was developed that included earth-sheltering on the northern side, increased southern exposure with the addition of the trombe wall, and black-stained cladding to absorb the southern heat. This intention of this low-impact home is that it can be repeated throughout Anak and used as a symbol for passive energy gain in an inclement environment.
