This is a joint venture Project between Ricci Greene Associates and 1100 Architect. Ricci Greene were primarily responsible for the internal planning and design of all interior spaces while 1100 Architect were responsible for the building Shell & Core.
The new Rikers Island facility will provide a central point of admissions and intake for most male adult inmates remanded to NYC Department of Correction. The new facility will include (512) single cells, (16) 50-bed dormitories and (225) general infirmary beds.The bed capacity is sufficient to house all newly admitted inmates for the first seven days in detention. The facility will have 820,000 gross sq. ft. encompassing a public lobby, central control, administration, staff support area, intake, visitation, health services including outpatient, specialty and mental health clinics, congregate programs space (notably education and religious services) as well as within each housing unit (including outdoor recreation) a barbershop, laundry, commissary, food services, maintenance and centralized intake. The DOC/DDC sustainable design goal is to achieve LEED Silver accreditation.
