The Van Alen Institute announced on Oct. 17 the upcoming launch of "Elsewhere", a multi-year initiative that will explore escapism in the contemporary urban environment. The community-centric initiative will consist of design competitions, various public programs, and research focusing on the multiplex aspects of escape — and how the findings from these investigations can create room for innovation and improvement in planning, design, and policy. — bustler.net

Photographer Jennifer Williams' upcoming "The High Line Effect" exhibition at the Robert Mann Gallery in New York presents the recently constructed High Line with a Dada-esque collage aesthetic, adding a twist — so to speak — to architectural photography. This latest exhibition from Williams uniquely critiques construction, while also giving commentary on real estate development, zoning laws, habitation patterns, and other urban-living and architectural issues. — bustler.net

"Erratic" is an installation piece by Swedish architects Norell/Rodhe that shows a lot of personality. Daniel Norell and Einar Rodhe recently completed the project, which was featured in Helsinki Design Week this past September.
Made from a thick custom-made sack restricted at hundreds of points, the massive 3 x 3 x 3 meter piece illustrates the tension between meticulous design and temperamental materials.

Over 1,350 people attended this year's Beaux Arts Ball at the 69th Regiment Armory in New York City on Sept. 28. Hosted by the Architectural League of New York — and with Archinect/Bustler as one of the media sponsors — the annual evening event brought together the architecture and design community for a centennial celebration of the infamous 1913 "Armory Show" — when European modern art was introduced into the U.S. The sold-out Ball also helps support other Arch. The AA DLAB VIsiting School 2013 marked its completion with the recent installment of its final prototype, "Light Forest." This year's workshop took place at AA London and AA Hooke Park from July 22-Aug.4.
