Archtober 2018 is approaching the halfway point of this month-long event series full of architecture-centered exhibitions, lectures, workshops, talks, conferences, film screenings, and tours across New York City's five boroughs.
For the eighth year in a row, Archinect & Bustler are proud to partner with Archtober and present you our weekly highlights from an eclectic calendar of events. Below are our recommendations for Archtober Week 3, October 16–22.

Building of the Day: R & Company | October 16
In June 2018, R & Company, a pre-eminent design gallery, opened its second location in Tribeca at 64 White Street. The renovated 1869 cast-iron building, designed by Kulapat Yantrasast of
wHY Architecture, hosts multilevel exhibition spaces and an academic
research center with an extensive archive and library.
Architecture & Design Film Festival: Opening Night – Film Screening | October 16
Opening night is the world premiere of Leaning Out by Basia and Leonard Myszynski. This is the story of Leslie Robertson, the lead structural engineer of the World Trade Center, a man who oversaw the construction of the tallest building on the planet, haunted by its collapse and 9/11 events.
Power to the People: Designing for Resilience Post Hurricane Maria | October 16
This interactive forum will bring together voices from various
front-line community groups, design professionals, and more to present
and discuss a comprehensive view of the post-disaster challenges that
architects and planners must help address in Puerto Rico and the region.
Building of the Day: Dock 72 | October 17
Inspired by the forms of the vessels that were once built in the Navy
Yard, the building’s “V-shaped” structural columns lift the ship-like
structure above the floodplain and form dual water and land access.
Untold Stories: Women of Architecture and Interior Design | October 17
Join us for a panel discussion highlighting the stories of women in the fields of architecture and interior design, throughout history to the present day.
National Design Awards: Winners’ Salon | October 17
National Design Award winners will lead salons for discussion of new ideas and advancements in design.
Building of the Day: Brooklyn Bridge Park Boathouse | October 18
Poised on riprap overlooking the water, a new boathouse extends from the
Pier 5 Uplands of Brooklyn Bridge Park. The porous structure punctuates
the rhythm of the one-and-a-half mile long park experience, connecting
the landscape to the waterfront.
Weathering the Storm: The Intersection of Finance and Resilience | October 18
At this year’s conference, experts will prompt attendees to think
differently, and with a sharper pencil, about the costs and benefits of
resiliency on a large scale.
2018 NPNY Winner Talk: Agency—Agency in Conversation with Andrés Jaque | October 18
This evening’s talk will feature a conversation between Tei Carpenter,
Principal of Agency—Agency, and Andrés Jaque of Office for Political
Innovation.
The Shelby White and Leon Levy Water Garden is a 1.5-acre wetland and
riparian environment with a network of innovative water conservation
features. It was designed by Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates to
highlight the beauty of water elements at BBG and anchor the Water
Conservation Project, a Garden-wide initiative to reduce outdoor
freshwater use and mitigate storm-water impact.
The Future of Governors Island | October 19
Join Michael Samuelian, President of the Trust for Governors Island and Amy Plitt, Editor of Curbed NY for a conversation about the future of this unique resource for the City and the vision for a year-round, 24/7 Governors Island.
Tenant Focus: Winning Efficiency Projects in the Commercial Space | October 19
Join NYSERDA’s Commercial Tenant Program and the Building Energy Exchange for a business development training workshop to help consultants, MEP engineers, and architects better understand how to integrate energy efficiency into their work with commercial tenants.
Building of the Day: 100 East 53rd Street | October 20
This 61-story residential tower at 100 East 53rd Street continues the
practice’s investigations into the nature of the tall building in New
York, exploring the dynamic between the city and its skyline.
Concept to Construction: Designing Exhibitions in the Guggenheim | October 20
Guggenheim Museum staff who usually work behind-the-scenes share their
stories on what makes the museum a unique and sometimes challenging
space in which to present art.
FDR Four Freedoms Park, Louis Kahn, and the Democratization of Public Space | October 20
In 2012, FDR Four Freedoms Park was completed posthumously as one of the
last great projects of the visionary architect Louis Kahn; this tour
will discuss the challenges of creating public spaces today.
Building of the Day: Kew Gardens Hills Library | October 21
This new library is designed to be a source of pride for the community. A
perimeter of open rooms for adults, teens, children and staff wraps a
core of stacks and is capped with a green roof.
Family Build and Wear Workshop | October 21
Create your own architecture-inspired Halloween costume!
New Museum Architecture Tour | October 21
Architecture tours are led by New Museum docents and focus on the
Museum’s building, which was designed by the architectural firm SANAA.
Building of the Day: Spyscape Museum | October 22
A new interactive museum experience situated in the podium of 250W 55th
St. The existing building is a 38-storey office tower designed by SOM,
completed in 2013. The demise is split over three levels; the entire
second level, partial ground level and partial cellar level.
Responsive Cities – Citizen Engagement | October 22
Responsive Cities are the new frontier in human settlement. Responsive
Cities engage residents and prospective citizens from the very beginning
in the planning and management of their habitat, based on Smart City
technologies.
David Benjamin Lecture | October 22
Focusing on the intersection of biology, computation, and design,
Benjamin has articulated three frameworks for harnessing living
organisms for architecture: bio-processing, bio-sensing, and
bio-manufacturing.
