FIRM PROFILE
S9 Architecture is a New York-based architecture firm dedicated to designing spaces, buildings and neighborhoods that respectfully integrate and enhance communities and cities. The designs we create are specific to their micro-geographies. They are authentic, additive, and transformative, while also fitting into the local urban context. We build the vibrant urban neighborhoods that people want to work in and live in. Through site analyses, historical and physical investigations, and studies of local cultural and behavior norms, we achieve our clients’ visions to establish exciting mixed-use developments that improve and elevate what’s unique to their specific locations.
OUR APPROACH
Our projects are not just spaces, buildings, they are neighborhoods and communities themselves. The combination of a process-oriented design method and conceptual thinking has produced a multidisciplinary practice with expertise in both new construction and adaptive reuse projects, as well as in varied typologies including residential, mixed-use, and retail. Our designs aim to ultimately transform neighborhoods, and we have successfully executed such transformations in places as varied as Nashville, San Francisco, Atlanta, Charlotte, St. Paul, Raleigh, and our hometown of New York City.
S9 Architecture approaches each individual project holistically, thoroughly analyzing the circumstances that shape each commission before initiating the design process. We begin with a preliminary examination of the economic, environmental, and contextual elements that inform each project in order to tailor spaces that meet both the client’s requirements and their end users’ pragmatic and aesthetic needs.
Our work for Empire Stores, Dock 72, 725 Ponce, 205 Water, Ponce City Market, and 111 Varick, among others, exemplify our approach to both design and placemaking. Each design is entirely unique to is location but grounded in the rational principles that guide our work. These projects are successful because they are the result of a rigorous process of discovery, sound planning, and a unique understanding of how to connect spaces with their environment.
