An exhibition spanning two continents will examine the influence of von Gerkan, Marg + Partners (gmp) over conversion projects at the Goethe-Institut in New York and at Architektur Galerie Berlin this fall.
In New York, UMBAU. Nonstop Transformation (which is included in this year’s Archtober programming) covers the growing impetus for building conversions using examples from different typologies. High-rises, cultural and sports buildings in Europe and Asia will come into focus there, including the recently completed Estadio Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid and Isarphilharmonie in Munich.
In Berlin, the exhibition changes focus to include three recent projects from the firm that were on display in parallel to last year’s Venice Architecture Biennale. The potential for conversions of former East German modernist structures will be the main subject. To date, the firm has been commissioned to more than eighty conversion projects worldwide — roughly a quarter of them currently at the design stage or under construction.
The dates for the exhibition are October 10th to November 6th at the Goethe-Institut and October 18th to the 26th at the Architektur Galerie Berlin.
