In the past 35 years Meinhard von Gerkan, Volkwin Marg and their partners have planned and constructed buildings in most major German cities.
They have designed small scale homes, hotels, museums, theatres and concert halls, office buildings, commercial centres and hospitals as well as research and educational facilities and buildings for transportation.
GMP became internationally known as a team of airport architects when, in 1975, they designed the Berlin-Tegel building with its drive-in airplane terminal for stacked parking”.
This innovative design has been further developed to transform the departure and arrival halls at Stuttgart and Hamburg airports.
They are internationally recognised not only for their completed projects like the New Trade Fair in Leipzig or the Christ Pavilion on the Expo 2000, but also for their designs, of which 350 scored prizes, more than 150 as first. Key examples are the designs for the New Central Station in Berlin, which is under construction, the reconstruction of the Olympic Stadium in Berlin, and the International Convention & Exhibition Centre in Nanning/China.
With their visionary proposals for the urban masterplan of Bucharest, Beijing Plaza or the projects "Stuttgart 21" and "Frankfurt 21" for the Deutsche Bahn, von Gerkan, Marg und Partner have proven town-planning competence.
In their understanding of the design process, question and answer mingle in close correlation: “Architecture as an art with social application is in the need of obviousness in an economic, constructive and formal way. Architecture has to reveal causality towards its content, reference towards its aim.”
