back then (this talk was 2003), libeskind's scheme seemed to have merit because it was both romantic AND pragmatic/realistic, recognizing the need for commerce and real estate to have play on this site. now it's become more apparent that it wasn't radical enough. because it could be understood as decorated square footage instead of, say - a radical open work structure with forms floating in it - it was coopted and twisted beyond recognition by those who could understand how to approach floors stacked on floors, i.e. real estate.
in this case the radical MIGHT have been more successful at maintaining both public excitement and integrity - and would therefore have actually been the more realistic/realizable.
